Camped this weekend at Lackawanna State park in the Maple Lane section, campsite #82. The site was a challenge for backing into with my 33’ camper. Had to watch two trees and the lot number sign. Site is sloped from the parking pad on the curbside and back of the camper. You wouldn’t be able to get the picnic table under your awning due to the slope. I liked the site. Was peaceful and quite and was next to the bathroom and shower. The park is beautiful, has a nice lake with a paved walking path next to the lake. As well as a playground and pool. There’s a swing set within walking distance of Maple Lanes campsites. The shower/bathroom building needed the grass cut as well as along the roadway. Especially since we have ticks in NEPA. There was a tree by the dump site that needs trimming which brushed against the travel trailer and the dump cap hinge was broken. The sink faucet for cleaning pots and pans was loose. Mention to the ranger, she just shrugged it off. Mentioned to the clean up guy, but didn’t seem concerned. Clean up workers seem friendly. While I enjoyed my visit, it was marred by the park ranger. When we were grilling our supper sitting peacefully enjoying the outdoors. My truck was parked next to my camper with two tires off the pavement a foot or so. But was on modified stone. She stopped and wrote a courtesy notice citation and said she would be back to see if I moved my truck in fifteen minutes. She also made the neighboring camper move his truck. Both of us campers are senior citizens. There are no rules posted. The state park I camped at last year didn’t bother campers with parking. This seemed like harassment to me and abuse of her authority. This is why people despise law enforcement. I prefer to not not to have any interaction with law enforcement. Especially when you see they allow visitors to park on the grass area parking along the lake. While I enjoyed my camping I won’t visit this park again to avoid the abuse by...
Read moreLots of good potential here, but our experience is a bit disappointing. First, hiking:
We did short hikes in two areas. Some of you who follow me know that I am on trail maintenance at my local NP. First, we hiked the trails between Lot 5 and the dam. They are pretty and worthwhile, but they are also poorly marked and include, it seems, a few social trails that are not taken care of.
The second area I hiked was only about 0.75 mi below our campsite. The trails below Fox Run Camping are terrible. They appear to be abandoned, and they leave, unmarked, from people's campsites. Some areas are very difficult to follow as they are overgrown with brush and have fallen trees in the way. Definitely not even remotely up to our NP standards, deer would be embarrassed to leave trails in this poor condition.
Our second issue was with the camphost that told the prior campers on our site that they might be able to stay past their reservation if we would accept another site. No other site with electrical accepting pets existed. We had to wait more than half an hour past check-in for the campers to clear out. We then found that these campers had dumped kibble on the site, and we were unable to have our dog outside. Thank goodness we are only staying one night. This wouldn't have been such a big issue if enough hours existed between check-out and check-in for camphosts to police sites, assuring that campers are gone on time and that the site is ready for the next guest.
While I was initially excited about camping here, I really can't recommend it and will not...
Read moreWe liked the park overall. The campground needs a little updating. We stayed in fox run loop. The sites seem to be good for rv, with great blacktop parking, but a little lacking for tents. Be sure to park all 4 wheels of your vehicle on the parking pad and not on the gravel as the ranger told us "move it before I come around the loop again or you will get ticketed". We have been PA state park camping for 30 years and have never had a ranger greet us like that. Also, at the welcome entrance they told us to park extra vehicle there, but we soon discovered the fox run parking was just a few yards from us, why didn't they tell us to park there? Maybe they were just having a bad day, or too stressed from Covid. Showers are VERY tiny, but the water was warm. The mens bathroom has been without soap for 2 days so we put our extra dispenser in there. The fan that ventilates the bathrooms are very loud and constant (like your unbalanced dryer thump thump thumping all day and night). Dish washing stations were great with deep sinks, hot water and even a counter! There is a new playground just outside of the loop that looks great! We were here in the fall so we did not go to the pool at all. Beautiful to see all the many colors in the trees as the leaves are turned. The overlook was beautiful! Fished at the lake near the warming hut and pier. Looks like many locals must use the park for...
