The trails aren't that well marked. We had to backtrack a few times trying to figure out where the paths went and which path was which. Even having 2 versions of the trail map didn't help much. We had to use our phone's GPS with the maps to guess at which trail to take. The shortest route to the water was fairly easy, even on my bad knees, and most of it was shaded, but about half of it was just along the gravel road, and the river wasn't that cool (although it was a lot wider than I expected).

Nice place for hiking, not too many people to compete with. You can drive into the Bean Shoals area but have to cross water three times to drive to the end. If you don't have 4WD I recommend not chancing it after heavy rains. There's a nice 3 mile round trip hike/ walk to the river. This time the river was really high and muddy due to heavy rains, but it's worth the effort no matter what the conditions.

LOVED this trail! Don’t recommend if it’s like your first time hiking because the trails are somewhat easy to get lost on, but other than that it’s great! Very quiet, i was the only one in the park for hours. River is beautiful:)

Not accessible unless you have a higher vehicle. There are three streams to cross on the road in. Not only are they fairly deep, the road on either side of the streams is steep which would cause bottoming out. But a Jeep, SUV, or truck wouldn't have issues under normal conditions.

Heavy rain would potentially make this section not accessible even with the aforementioned.

Trails here are the Horne Creek (moderate blue blazes), Yadkin Islands (moderate white blazes), and Bean Shoals (easy red blazes). Parking at the Bean Shoals trail and Horne Creek Trails. Bathrooms at Horne...

Great little river section of Pilot Mountain Park that is less known and a little less travelled. One of the cool things about it is that you have to turn onto a gravel road off of the State road and Cross three Creeks and continue driving through the woods before reaching the first section. The first section has a bathroom (pit), grills and trail access. If you continue on you'll wind up at the river access. Absolutely beautiful views of both the woods and the Yadkin river. You can camp there as well but...

Recent upgrades to this park area makes it more accessible to all vehicles, not just 4x4's. The old creeks now have nice culverts with drystack rocks allowing a smooth creek crossing. All vehicle crossing areas have been tidied up while being upgraded , offering beautiful views of the natural rock features in the creek beds. The added picnic shelter offers comfortable covered seating and beautiful Yadkin river views. This park location is an added gem to the list of Surry County recreations...
