While traveling from Hampton Virginia to visit the city, North Carolina. We came across a rest area called Dismal Swamp Canal. Within the rest area was a Welcome Center and Gift store. I went in to look around and had the pleasure of speaking to one of the two women working. I forgot to get her name. However, she was the friendliest and most Knowledgeable person you'd ever expect to meet. There. Were all kinds of free materials and information plus maps alongside all of the merchandise in the retail side. I left with a bag full of free resources And a wealth of information. She opened the exit door for me in my wheelchair and answered. Questions about the butterfly garden that apparently is one of many to help the butterflies in their migration. I then proceeded outside to go over to the restrooms, and discovered there was a separate restroom building or a handicap access. I wish I'd stop there. Could have been longer because there were hiking trails and picnic areas and everything was impeccably clean. I've never seen anything like it in all of my travels across the USA. North Carolina, it's certainly doing something right, at least with this rest area. I'm. Anxious to go back just to visit because the experience was so pleasurable. I highly recommend this rest. Stop if you want to experience The nicest people, great information, the cleanest facilities, beautiful picnic areas and even hiking trails. It certainly wasn't a "Dismal" experience. Being retired from the National Park Service as a federal law enforcement offisir, I can safely say this was truly the best rest area, and visitors center I...
Read moreThe Dismal Swamp Welcome Center is hands down one of the best rest stops around. From the moment you pull in, youâll notice thereâs plenty of parking, making it easy for all types of travelers, whether youâre in a car, RV, or towing a trailer. The open areas are well-maintained, offering a welcoming and relaxing atmosphere.
One of the standout features here is the cleanlinessâthis place is super clean, and thatâs not an exaggeration. The bathrooms are spotless, well-stocked, and everything functions exactly as expected. No bad smells, no broken fixturesâjust a well-kept, comfortable stop. There are plenty of trash cans, and they are never overflowing, which is a testament to how well this place is maintained.
Beyond just being a great rest area, the walking path is a nice bonus. After a long drive, itâs refreshing to be able to stretch your legs and take a stroll along a peaceful, scenic trail. Itâs a great touch that sets this welcome center apart from others.
Overall, this is a fantastic stop whether you need a quick break or just want a quiet place to relax before continuing your journey....

If I had a tent I could have camped. found a chair on the left side of the building and tried to sleep for a few hours. at 4 am got woken by a cop, telling me it was time to leave. so I left rode about 50 miles or so, and pulled over near a river, laid down on the rocks covered path. I think I was in Windsor. sure enough, another cop. ( I got to talk to this officer for a few minutes, He turned out to be a freemason also. he let me say.) I think I slept for 3 hours. around 8:30 ish, I packed up and left ( Sunday morning). from there I rode all the way down to the boarder of Florida and found a motel, and slept for 11 hours. for what I saw of the Dismal swamp park, it was nice and clean, rest rooms also were clean. a few vending machines inside. I now carry a cot tent in my trailer, no more sleeping on the chair or...
