We hiked the trail leading to Gregory's Bald, which is in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The trail also runs through the Nantahala National Forest. The trail passes through several different ecosystems including "old growth" forests and forests of rhododendrons. The hike is a very consistent climb of about 450 - 500 feet of elevation gain per mile of trail. The lower part of the trail plays tag with a cold mountain stream. The trail is mostly dirt, unlike many trails in the Smokys which are stone and natural gravel, but there are numerous and frequent roots and boulder tops and edges which represent tripping and ankle twisting hazards all along the way. Because you are hiking in a forest there are few locations that offer distant views, but the ones that do present themselves are beautiful. I recommend this hike if you are physically active and have all day to enjoy being in...
