Never tired of this overlook - ample parking, close to Asheville, a spectacular view throughout the day... the drive up from downtown is beautiful - parkway, town mtn road, or the more scenic route of elk mtn scenic highway (see buzzard rock)... You can go farther and get better views, but within this proximity to downtown - it's the best. The haw creek overlook can be nice, but it is low hanging fruit - lower elevation, easier access makes it generally more populated while also being a bit trickier to park in (I've seen a car over the cliff)... I like to pass by coming back from Tanbark ridge Pic taken nearer to sunset, standing in shade. Sunrise can be spectacular, and at night this is about where the light pollution dwindles enough to truly enjoy the stars (been here for a few meteor showers). Again, you can go farther to see more, but if you are in AVL and want a quick view of beauty - this is it... The distance/difficulty is also great for a challenging (but not totally epic) bike ride from the folk art center...

We didn't go all the way to the end, cause we haven't done physical activity in ages. It's mainly a wooded area, but there are some clearings where you can see out. The path follows the road, so you can hear the traffic. There are some steepish areas, and places that are essentially like taking 2 stairsteps at a time, but otherwise pretty easy to traverse.

I would say mildly kid and dog friendly. But the paths are narrow and the drop off is steep so don't let your babies, or fur babies, crowd people cause it'd likely cause them to fall to their death. 100% NOT ok to have your pet...

oh my God the views from here were absolutely stunning and simply amazing you could see the weather system come in from one Mountain Ridge to another and you truly start to understand why they call it the Great Smoky Mountains and the Blue Ridge Mountain Range. young and old alike will definitely like this. if you are a photographer make sure you have your camera handy you will...

stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys; The landscape is characterized by rolling hills and dense forests. The Mountains-to-Sea Trail, which spans North Carolina from the Great Smoky Mountains to the Outer Banks, crosses near the overlook.
