A surprisingly great little find. The backdrop of the mountains is absolutely stunning and the small museum is actually very nicely done. The man working there the day we visited allowed our small dog to come into the museum with us, which was very appreciated. We are not from the area and knew nothing about the Vance, but it was a recommended stop on a website to see the fall leaves. The exhibits actually seemed relatively well balanced in presenting the history of the man and his politics as well as home life (including slavery.) The buildings on the property are extremely well maintained and interesting to see with some original furnishings. Bathrooms are offered on site and are also well maintained. Overall, a great stop on our way to drive some of the Blue Ridge Parkway and would definitely recommend for a short, 15-30 minute visit.

Very nice historical place to tour. Its self guided due to Covid but that's perfectly fine because they have so much written information that having a tour guide would make it difficult to read all of it. Lots of articles to peruse. My favorite were the tools like the pitchfork displayed on the wall. The cabins outside are really cool too. Like stepping back in time. An actual loom is on display in one of the buildings. You'll see farming tools, writing desk and other historical treasures inside the cabins. Just check for spider webs before you stick your head through the openings. Lol

We came upon this place by accident today and it was a wonderful experience! We visited the museum then we did the tour with Will, and the tour was wonderful! The tour is only $2 per person and lasts 30-40 minutes. The visit is worth the learning experience about NC history in western NC. I was amazed at all of the places named after Vance!

Take a walk back in time and visit the birthplace of Governor Zebulon Baird Vance. Its an easy ride from Asheville, out in the country. The 1800 s cabin is a place to learn and see how our forefathers lived. It was back in a day of simplicity, where the stress of the day was all about gathering food and keeping warm. A time of gathering around the fireplace in the colder months, where all meals were prepared. While the living was harsh, it was certainly less complicated than our world today. Bring a picnic when you visit and sit under an old oak tree, because the grounds around the Vance Homestead are picturesque and inviting. You might want to leave your electronic gadgets in your vehicle, dress in costume and pretend like you are living back in time. Make it a fun day! Bring your children, because its an enlightening,...

Entirely FREE! I promise you will find yourself wanting to donate a couple dollars once you are done though.

Friendly and welcoming staff! They give you a little laminated piece of paper with one side showing the layout of the property, and the other side showing the uses/history behind each building.

Small but very information-filled museum. A great, neutral peek into an important part of history for the area, the state, and the country.

There are also some clean restrooms and a shelter with picnic tables.

Definitely recommend if you have some extra time while staying in Asheville, exploring Weaverville, or driving along the Blue...
