I nearly missed this quiet gem, and that would have been a real shame. Just across from the Ingles Market in Newland, a small parking lot and an unassuming sign mark the entrance to a surprisingly dramatic series of cascading waterfalls. The trail that climbs alongside the falls was carved out by volunteer firefighters, and while the incline is moderate, it offers a satisfying challenge with scenic rewards that grow more impressive the higher you go. The path is manageable for most hikers, though it does require a bit of care and attention.
At the base of the falls, a few picnic tables are tucked among the trees, offering a peaceful spot to sit and take in the sound of rushing water. The waterfalls themselves are double-tiered, tumbling over layers of rugged stone, and a natural rock bridge provides a reasonably secure way to cross to the opposite side. I had the entire park to myself today, and although climbing solo may not have been the wisest choice, I made the ascent and descent without issue. The solitude, the scenery, and the gentle roar of the water made for a memorable visit, and I left with a handful of lovely photos and a quiet sense of contentment.
Locals also refer to this spot as Bobby McLean Memorial Park, named in honor of a beloved community figure whose legacy continues to shape this tranquil corner of town. It is a place that invites reflection, exploration, and a deeper appreciation for the natural beauty tucked into the folds of...
Read moreWe traveled to Newland, NC for a festival. While there we decided to have a picnic at this park. Waterfalls Park (also known as Bobby McLean Memorial Park - named after a volunteer fire fighter who died under circumstances we could not determine by googling his name) is maintained by the volunteer fire department. There is a .6 mile loop trail past the waterfalls. We started walking the trail stopped after a short distance due the trail being very muddy due to recent rains and the fact we were in street type shoes instead bod our normal hiking boots. But I think the falls are thenmain attraction...
