Yesterday I witnessed the most pathetic and reprehensible behavior I have ever seen from a staff member of any establishment, and just an absolute embarrassment for a golf club.
We were waiting to tee off on a hole on the back nine when an older lady in a club car drove up and started SCREAMING at the random twosome I had been paired with (two young guys, maybe 18 or so). She starts berating them about “driving on the tee”. They had not driven on the tee, they were about 15 feet off of it in a section of half dirt, half dead grass. If your policy is cart path only by the tees, fine, you can politely remind people of that. But they were doing nothing I hadn’t witnessed hundreds of times at dozens of courses and were doing zero damage whatsoever to the tee box or course. And this was not polite, it was unhinged yelling that I would be embarrassed to witness a 7-year-old exhibit.
She then begins yelling at them about how they had left tire tracks on a green on a prior hole, some they had definitely not done. We’d played 12 or so holes at that point and neither my father or I had noticed anything noteworthy about their cart behavior. I would definitely remember something as egregious as driving on a green. Certainly nothing they could have done was worthy or the crazed tongue lashing they were receiving. I would find out later an older man in the group behind us had apparently reported these young guys for this offense. I can’t even remotely guess what he was referencing and can only assume he doesn’t like a young brown man playing on his course and saw what he wanted to see.
After about 30-40 seconds of screaming that left all 4 of us stunned and confused, she adds “AND PICK UP THE PACE OF PLAY!!! There is no reason you should still be waiting to hit!” At this point she had gone so far beyond the pale it was laughable. We had at that point been forced to wait at every single tee box and every green (not sure if the group in front of us was slow or waiting on someone in front of them). When she had pulled up, the group in front was about 170 yards out in the fairway and they had pulled up further while she was losing her mind at us.
At this point I would like to point out that my 74-year-old father and I are now implicated in this tirade, because pace of play is the fault of the entire group. So now I’m not just witnessing this embarrassing display of childlike anger, I am now the target of it. We started to protest that we’d been backed up all day and the group was not at a safe distance when she arrived, and she just cut us off with more screaming as she drove away, again yelling to pick up the pace of play and threatening the twosome that they’d be in big trouble if she caught them disobeying cart rules again (they were overly polite with the cart the rest of the round; they were great to play with, a simple polite reminder would have been more than enough).
Let's assume somehow that I’m blind and just missed this atrocious cart behavior all day. 1) Absolutely nothing these kids could have done could have been worthy of the absurd, raving attack they received, especially from an employee in the hospitality industry to paying customers. 2) My father and I were screamed at for pace of play while we finished in exactly the four and a quarter hours recommended by the course despite having to wait for every tee and green. Also, the group behind us that “reported” our playing partners consisted of 4 individuals in 4 separate carts. It is lunacy to scold a group for pace of play when the group trailing them isn’t following standard cart etiquette. Of course they could be waiting on us, even if we were playing at a perfectly normal pace.
I’m writing all of this in hopes that the club pro sees the review, knows which employee I’m talking about, and disciplines them. Because this was an embarrassment for your club and the employee should be ashamed of herself. I won’t be coming back, and I doubt those kids will. You made all of us feel unwelcome on your...
Read morePlayed a round March 5 2016. It will be the last one. I have been playing this course since 2002 when I moved to the area. Bought a house on the course several yeas ago, so this is hard to say. Wescott is the most poorly managed golf course I have ever been to. 5 to 5.5hr rounds. People hitting into you while you wait to hit your shot. BLUE JEANS, I'm sorry that is like a cardinal rule of golf, collared shirts and no blue jeans are rules of golf. And no I'm not 80 years old I'm only 34 and I do belive in those rules. There are also courtesy rules. If there is a group on your ass waiting on every shot for ten min then u need to let them play through especially In the afternoon when you are fighting a clock and darkness. That's what happened to myself and my 2 other friends that both own homes in wescott and sware they won't come back. We called the pro shop and it felt like we were being interrogated by police. They obviously didn't want to talk about it. Finally they say they will send someone out. Well I'm not sure what good it does when they just ride by in the cart and don't stop to say anything to anyone. Very poor service. They could have told the group in front of us to let us play through or pick up the pace a bit. We were a 3some waiting on a 4some for 10 minutes on EVERY SHOT. But that's what u get at wescott. You will never see a ranger on the course, all they do is take your receipt, wright down your cart number, tell u which 2 nines to play and say have a nice day. Then you get to the tee box and there are 4 groups waiting to tee off. Zero control of t times. U can make a 2 o'clock t time, show up at one and just go. There is no one stopping you. Also during our round there was trash all over the course, trash lying next to the trash cans where the trash cans were empty, absolutely disgusting, that's the type of person that wescott encourages to come play the course. If there was a ranger patrolling the course while play is going on mabye he could pick the trash up so people don't think this or mabye he could catch the people doing it. But that would be way to easy. I have played here when there are people walking, riding bikes, riding skateboards, scooters, playing games, having paintball wars, I've seen it all and management has FAILED MISERABLY to fix any of it. Again, this is all hard to say because I do like this area and I'm not moving anyware anytime soon. I just wish they would get this place under control. But I guess if they are okay making money being the dirt track of North Charleston then they have accomplished their goal. There are many other good courses in the area, I suggest you don't waste your money at wescott. It's so bad I would spend 20 dollars more not...
Read moreUpdate I was called by the General Manager after this review where he explained the issue and agreed with my assessments/complaints. I was offered a free round for my experience and decided to use that this last weekend. I tried to give the course time to remedy the situation and avoid the period when aeration normally happens.
I was pleasantly surprised! The greens were back to being very good. One green of the 18 did was still recovering from the fungus, but the rest were great. The fairways were in good condition as well. The sand traps had quite a lot of standing water in them, so that was still a bit disappointing, but I luckily didn't make my way into one. I'm glad that they were able to get the greens back in shape as this is my preferred home course and their customer service was also very much appreciated. End Update
The course itself was in terrible condition. The sand traps were inconsistent though most felt like hitting off of hardpan. The rough is completely unmanaged, so anything wayward is surely gone. The greens though, were abysmal. Every single one of them was at least 30%-50% dead. It was worse than trying to play on an aerated green. I'm not sure if they just had a bad disease outbreak this year, but it was really awful. I won't be going back this season for sure. There are plenty of other nicer courses in the immediate vicinity that are...
