Absolutely one of the prettiest places i’ve seen in North Dakota! It was a long and at times confusing but well worth it! We saw a variety of wildlife such as bunnies, deer and even (from a distance ) buffalo!! Such a great experience and so beautiful. I would 1000% recommend this hike, it ended for us being a 3 hour hike with picture strips of course. At some point the snow was to our hips and super slippery. Definitely an easier hike in better weather!

Definitely the highlight of our trip here was this trail- if you’re only looking to do one trail- this is it. You get to see a bit of everything from this trail. We saw a lot of bison 🦬(from far away) as well as saw a deer up close and a baby rattlesnake even closer (oops). We did not run into anyone else doing this trail so it felt very private. There is a lot of brush in some areas so you may want to wear long pants.

IF IT IS WET OUT, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO HIKE! The trail conditions were so slick and muddy and dangerous. We could only make it a mile in before turning around. I wish we could’ve hiked the loop on different day, but we had no idea how impossible the trail would become if it was raining. We had to hold onto trees as lifelines to be able to navigate without falling. This was one of the worst hiking experiences I’ve ever had

Best trail in the park. Long and far, not a ton of elevation gain. Worth walking for the views. Lots of hoodoos around and big open views. The grass with the rock formations is unique. Highly recommended. You do get to a lot of spots people can drive to but quickly are away as soon as you are back on the trail

I actually took the prairie dog town trail that branches off the Caprock Coulee trail and runs parallel, but I imagine both are equally worth taking if given time. I had great views and even though it was winter, the sun was out so I got to see the prairie dogs out and about.

This was an exceptional hike.
My biggest critique is if the park staff. The trail is poorly maintained but the hike and route is one of the best I’ve done. We did it backwards to get through the climb first. It’s a ridge hike with beautiful vistas
