Bird Island is a very crowded boating spot. Some of the people are kind of rude ex: obnoxious, all over your stuff. There are rocks in one section of the beach, not a good spot to swim because the rocks are sharp and I remember hearing about someone dying because the hit their head on the rocks. It is a really amazing place to swim and hang out in the water. The sand is very packed in some spots and very mushy in others. (The mushy spots are comfy for your feet). The island has some trails to go on that take you throughout the island, some of them go in circles though. There are very big dunes on some of the trails that are fun to climb. I would suggest bringing shoes though because the sand is scorching hot and there are sandspers. If you are a fisher, you should go to the jetties, where there are not a lot of people, to fish. The rocks attract all kinds of small fish, which attract bigger fish. Overall, Bird Island is a fun place to enjoy the sun and water and I...

This was our second visit to the reserve and we enjoyed it very much. The biggest impediment to visiting is finding parking at the west end of W Main Street where there are four regular parking spaces plus two handicap spaces. Once on the beach, it's about 1.25 miles to the nature trail, but it's worth the walk. It was quite windy when we were there and we had no problem with insects. Parts of the trail can be a little wet and anyone with mobility issues may have a hard time on parts of the trail. We heard many and saw two painted buntings, which is what we were hoping to see. There are other birds, of course, and it's a nice, quiet walk through a beautiful,...

Beautiful pristine stretch of beach for 1.7 miles. Starting in june there are numerous turtle nests along the edge of the dunes. It's a beautiful walk as there are no wall-to-wall ugly houses to look at. I would suggest not going at high tide as the beach gets slim, at half tide to low tide the beach gets to about 50 yards wide with tide pools along the edge of the surf. If you want solitude go during the middle of the day as only the hardiest of soul's will be out in the heat. Wonderful place to take your dog for a walk after 6 p.m.. The only downfall to this beach is the complete lack of shells, just...

Bird Island Reserve, located in Brunswick County, North Carolina, between the Town of Sunset Beach and the Little River Inlet in South Carolina, is a serene and pristine coastal sanctuary known for its unspoiled beauty and rich biodiversity. Accessible only by foot or boat, this 1,400-acre barrier island is part of the North Carolina Coastal Reserve and National Estuarine Research Reserve. It is home to a wide range of wildlife, including endangered species such as loggerhead sea turtles and piping plovers. The reserve features undisturbed sandy dunes, salt marshes, and tidal creeks, providing a vital habitat for migratory birds, fish, and other coastal species. Visitors to Bird Island can enjoy peaceful walks along its shores, hiking the Island's nature trail, birdwatching, a visit to the Kindred Spirit Mailbox, and an opportunity to experience the natural beauty of a protected coastal ecosystem. https://thesociableadventurer.com/bird-island-reserve/ #BirdIsland #BirdIslandNC #BrunswickCounty #BrunswickCountyNC #VisitNC #CelebratingNC #discover_carolinas #discoverNC #bestofthetarheelstate #NC #NorthCarolina #Adventure #Discover #Explore #TheSociableAdventurer #EasternNC #ENC #CoastalNC #greattrailsstate #greattrailsnc #VisitBrunswickCounty #GetOutThere #OptOutside #Bog #NCEcosystems #NChabitats #HikeNC #ExploreNC

Love walking to the mailbox! When I see someone there writing I give them their time but when I went the other day I had a lady stand waiting for me to leave. She also was snapping photos of me which really upset me. To me that place is for you to reflect on life or prayer. Write down memories, words unsaid to someone or just to write a sweet note of support to anyone reading. I really didn't appreciate this photographer waiting for me to leave by standing at the foot of the dune and photographing me.
