I literally stumbled upon this wonderful nature preserve while recycling paper ..it's tucked behind a school at the end of a neighborhood.. perfect trail for my needs, full of wildflowers and wildlife... the center is full of interesting local fossils and finds. The Mastodon bones are extremely nice to see. The best part was the bird watching room . I spent almost an hour sitting in a comfy chair watching hundreds of different birds swoop in and out . Seeing them jostling around the several feeding platforms was quite fascinating, and was exactly what I needed.. great place to bring the kids, and there's several picnic benches if you want to bring a basket ..

We enjoyed a full moon hike on our first visit. The ancient nature preserve hasn’t changed much since it was first created by the glacial melt. Native plants abound even in fall. We saw a lot of hummingbirds, deer, and a woodpecker. The guide was very nice and took her time to explain the different things we were seeing. The paths are easy to walk, mainly compacted sand but the spa have wooden boards. There is a nature center but it was closed after hours. Many old trees, sassafrass was also spotted. Take an afternoon and enjoy this special area in NW Indiana

We love Gibson woods. The trails are lovely and well kept with lots of native flowers to enjoy. The nature center has good events and interesting interactive learning events. Today we went to the turtle feeding. The staff member in the photo then walked around and answered my daughter’s questions about the native bugs and plants and the different exhibits. It was a wonderful fun learning experience

There use to be pretty good fishing out there; During the 1990's. You can only carry so much to the back of the Lake. Walking that Bridge seemed to take forever. Last time I was back there? Must have been around 10 years ago. The water was very low. Lily Pads everywhere. I don't know? Maybe it's better back there now. UPDATE 09/17/25 I would like to thank "Gibson Woods" for enlightening me on my comment 😊 You are correct! 😃 I was definitely referring to "The Oxbowl" in Hammond. I remember an Apartment Complex called Kennedy Park. My boyfriend and I have been all over Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin; Back in those days 😊 So many I can barely remember the names! 😅 Please accept my deepest apologies ❤️ My boyfriend told me to always ask him about; "Bodies of Water" Before submitting a review. I will do that next time! 😊 Thanks for reaching out!. God...

Not as nice as it used to be 😥 Back in the day? We called it "The Oxbowl". During the 90's it was a great place to Hike, Fish, and have Picnics, but not "Child-Friendly". It was tiresome carrying everything to the Fishing Bank on that Bridge! There was no Port-A-Potty! 😣 The last time I was there I say it was around 1997. We had to fight all of the Weeds, Bees and Mosquitoes; that were practically covering the walk on the Bridge! No more pretty Birds! 😥 and the water level was very low and full of Lilypads. This place is nothing but a Swamp now! (Actually?) I expected to...
