This was a one-of-a-kind experience. I must laud the effort and commitment of the staff/volunteers working at the nature center. Everyone here is so full of passion for Entomology and most importantly, sharing it with visitors in the most lucid way possible. Shakira greeted us with a smile and welcomed in through the gates of Arthropalooza. Marissa gave us an informed tour around the Butterfly House. Ian went an extra mile in explaining metamorphosis of a butterfly's lifespan. Kyla gave us a wonderful account of a honey-bee's nesting habits, showed us the hives and also allowed me to sample some honey.
There are so many activities for kids including insect-themed games & artworks; some of which even grown-ups can partake and some have prizes to win too! Madagascar Hissing Cockroach Race - hosted by a summersaulting teenager who was excited about doing the show with a spring in his step (literally!). Arthropalooza Scavenger Hunt - conducted by a young lady who gave me all the directions about the trail and handed me my prize in spite of me cheating in my quest of identifying bugs :) ...too bad I can't remember everyone's name! Not to mention - the old man who had an exhibit with a microscope to observe pond life, and the gentleman who had a stall to display all crustaceans.
The proud trait across all the volunteers that really impressed me was that they neither expect nor accept gratuity or tips -...
Read moreGreat place and so peaceful! My Grandmom would bring us here as kids to walk, check out animals, look for turtles and 30 + years I'm still coming when in town and bringing my kid. They do a great job with events for everyone especially getting kids educated on nature and learning to enjoy it along with being respectful/helpful. Cute little trails, some with a wooden path we were able to get my Grandmom down to water in her wheelchair but the rest is dirt paths outside. The butterfly garden isn't anything huge but so peaceful and a must see. The inside has everything from snakes, birds, turtles, cockroaches, sitting area to read, area for kids to play, area for kids to learn and so much more! You can check it all out in a hour or spend the day enjoying it all slower, going into their library to read about anything nature, bird watch, etc. Also, never noticed the Playground they have on side of building but is pretty neat. There's 2 sandbox areas, swings, things to climb, slide and...
Read moreMy rating has some caveats. We got here to eat a picnic dinner after the welcome center closed. Parking and picnicking were fine, nothing much exciting to say there. So then we walked around hoping to get to see the lake ... And on the way, we found this little simple bird blind. I saw eight different kinds of birds in about 15 minutes. And what was nice for me, an amateur who's not really into birding or anything, is that there were two big posters that allowed me to identify what I saw. I didn't think this would be fun, but it was really cool. :-) We continued down to the lake where we saw other birds I had never seen before and there was something about it which was just really peaceful. Walking back along a wooded path, we saw a woodpecker and something else. I know this sounds simple, but I really like seeing all the different birds and the thing is that even if I hadn't seen the birds, the vibe of the place was just really calm...
