We are art gallery gallery junkies as well as amateur artists. This bright little roadside gallery is on the windward side of Oahu and well worth the drive. Being bright yellow it stands out right next to Kamehameha Highway. Incidentally up the road is a beach with a trampoline in the water so you could make it an afternoon. Anyway, this gallery has a nice selection of both 2-D and 3-D artwork in many genres. There are watercolors, acylics, lithos, woodworking and fused glass, the latter of which I thought was quite exquisite. There's a busy frame shop in the back and friendly staff to wait on art lovers. No pushy sales' pitches here and it is family friendly. Prices weren't modest or outrageous but this is Oahu. We particularly liked an artist named Patrice Ann Federspiel who paints enchanting watercolors of mermaids, turtles and dolphins with Aloha! We bought some small pieces but may start collecting her works in earnest. A 5-by-8 inch matted piece entitled, "Swimming with Friends" cost $30 which is less than a t-shirt on this expensive island. Go buy some genuine Hawaiian art and support a...
Read moreMy husband and I were given a very large photo of Kahuku Sugar Plantation, a Kahuku Map dated Sept 28, 1949. Courtesy of University of Hawaii School of Ocean and Earth Science Technology. This happen when my 92 year old uncle passed away. This photo map of the plantations homes holds dear memories for Kahuku people who went to Kahuku Elementary and High School and all who worked for the sugar plantation. The map is an view from the plane. On the homes are the names of the families who worked for the sugar plantation. I wanted it framed and Jim Franklin, the manager was so helpful and very nice. He helped me pick out the frame, he put hangers so we'll be able to hang it up. He even delivered the picture because it would not fit into our car and offered to help hang it on the wall. Jim did it all the very same day. It is beautiful, brings back some good memories of dear friends and family in Old Kahuku stands our Alma mater. If I close my eyes I can even hear the whistle of "hana hana time", "kau, kau time", and "pau hana time"! Mahalo Jim, for helping an old...
Read moreEvery time we go to Oahu, we always stop by Sunshine Arts... and always end up with something to take home. They have the most beautiful and unique artwork -- that really represents life in Hawaii and the Hawaiian spirit. We ended up purchasing 3 very beautiful pieces, this time, and are so happy. Prices are MUCH lower than what you would pay in Honolulu. The owner, Jim, is great... and Laetitia, the Gallery Manager, is a real treasure. She really takes her time helping you pick just the right paintings and is extremely knowledgeable about every detail of the business. We LOVE working with her! The artwork was shipped to us in New York and arrived quickly and in perfect condition. I would definitely recommend Sunshine Gallery as one of your stops, next time you visit...
