The O'fallon historical society is harmful and disrespectful to the rich history of natives and settlers of O'fallon. I came to O'fallon from IN to tour because the society holds documents that are relics of some of my past family. I entered the establishment with curiosity, kindness and an open mind. My tour guide handled many paper photographs, documents and books well over a hundred years old with her bare hands(sunlight and oils on hands damaging to paper). When I asked questions about the native american groups who had lived in O'fallon while looking at a display case of Native totems and tools my guide said quoted "the INDIANS left these when they passed through." Old beautiful paintings from long dead artists of the midwest were displayed in DIRECT SUNLIGHT. And the most heartbreaking and horrific, the teaching certificate my great aunt Annice worked so hard to earn so she could sustain her own home in a time when women relied on husbands, folded and locked away. Why? Because the society is aware my family would like to display it in our home as it is the ORIGINAL copy of her accomplishments. Previously the society kept it crinkled in an envelope in their basement. Justice for O'fallon, all items should be donated to a legitimate historical org that where they can be properly cared for.
