I live in Southport full-time and have been surfing between Yaupon and Ocean Crest piers all summer and will continue to so into the winter. Ocean Crest tends to have better waves and cleaner water, so that is favored.
However, I went up to the Pier today to throw away a grocery bag of trash that was from personal use, and a collection of cigarette butts, straw wrappers, plastics, etc that myself and friends picked up from the beach. This middle aged woman with short hair (should’ve asked for her name) grabbed the bag out of my hands and told me “you can’t do that” when i went to throw the grocery bag away in the inside.
Instead of asking “Why?”, I instead asked “Where can I throw it away?” To which she told me to throw it away at the trash can in front of the beach access (which was full btw). Luckily, there’s two dumpsters to throw trash away. No wonder there is SO much trash on our beaches, especially near this pier
I will admit to my own faults. I have learned as of today, about the 350ft ordinance to surf away from the pier. No one had told myself or my friends anything, but to prevent conflict, I have the knowledge for the future. We had a hammock set up under the pier (I haven’t seen any rules/ordinance against that) to which the same lady told us to take it down.
Any response clear up this behavior would be appreciated and understood, but as far as the reaction in throwing the trash away “in an appropriate place” (as OKI website...
Read moreTreated very rudely by the lady after we paid our $2 to access the pier (a total of $20 for our group). We had arrived early to Oak Island and needed something to do while we were waiting. There were no signs stating there was no public access to the beach. My friend and I sat on the pier while our teenage kiddos played on the beach. The lady watched as they used the restroom to dress for the beach and never said a word. My daughter came in one time and used the restroom. We were there about an hour and decided to leave. When the kids came to get us from the pier, the lady refused to let them through. She was very rude and told them we needed to leave or they would tow our car. When we didn’t leave immediately she came out to escort us from the pier. She then proceeded to tell us we weren’t allowed there unless we were fishing. I tried to explain that we just misunderstood not being from the area. She basically said she didn’t care and to leave. We were planning to return the next day to let our teenage boys fish but I will NOT be returning. I truly understand not letting us just walk through and carry in sand but I have never had a proprietor of a business treat me in...
Read moreI took my wife and four children to the pier to fish and check out the ocean. I refused to wear a mask that at the least actually does little to prevent the spread of this illness. I like breathing. Go figure. I was refused entry from the hateful, snarky cashiers for this reason and told to leave while I watched a gentleman come in from the pier and walk within six feet of people without a mask. Selective enforcement of this rule perhaps? I stepped outside to wait for my children to go ahead onto the pier with some other family members. At this time the cashier remarked to my mother-in-law that she was giving me five minutes to leave or she was calling police. During this time I watched a group of folks get rejected because they did not have masks. They stepped outside and remarked to me that the pier charges $1.00 for mask if someone doesn’t have one. Sounds like the pier is profiting off of this circus. Shame on the owner, management, and employees for going along...
