Great place for taking the family to learn and enjoy nature. There are programs every day (typical sheduled at 11 and 2) lead by the staff, usually the naturalists. The staff is knowledgable and accommodating. The top floor boasts a gift shop with some local made items, souvenirs, and science toys. All if that pales in comparison to the beautiful exibits of fish, amphibians, and reptiles all with stories and information. Insider tip: for the adventurous types, the naturalist are always happy to take out an animal and tell you their stories if you ask (if they haven't already asked you) and you may even get to touch them 😉. The bottom floor has books, puzzles, animal displays, and more (and bathrooms for those who were wondering). This floor is more suited to those seeking natural resources information and youngsters. Outside towards the lake there is a dock and some walking trails connecting you to the rest of the park. Beyond the impressive static displays, a dynamic schedule of naturalist-led programs, like guided hikes and "Scales & Tales" animal presentations, further enhances the visit, making it a perfect, family-friendly experience that extends from the indoor learning spaces to the park's scenic outdoor trails. It's an enriching and educational stop that fosters a deeper connection to the local environment...
Read moreAdjacent to the state park proper, the Discovery Center is a great free nature museum showing all the local wildlife in the area with some live specimens to look at.
The downstairs is a more hands-on area for the kids to play around. There's also a souvenir shop here.
In the back, you can walk out to a pier and dock on the lake and it also connects to the long hiking trail which will lead you into the state park. I'd also recommend stopping by the center's aviary, just up the trail from the parking lot. Has a few large birds, to include their beautiful bald eagle.
They offer different activities for all ages each day of the week to include fishing and a bird watching walk. Great spot to check out...
