First time here and did not get a good impression of this campground. The location and playground was nice, but there were a number of issues. To start, the lake and beach was disgusting. We had a lot of little kids swimming in it that ended up upset due to being covered in leeches. I know that this isn’t something they can help, but a warning sign would have been nice.
The bathroom facilities were not cleaned regularly and were highly unsanitary. When people are constantly using the restrooms and showering, the bathroom facility needs to be cleaned daily. Due to COVID-19, other businesses have to adhere to strict sanitation procedures, but a government entity doesn’t?
On the last day, the shower was so unbelievable cold, it was painful to shower in. I even waited 20 minutes for the water to heat up. I had a long drive home and did not want to sit in my own filth the whole way, so I ended up showering anyway.
There was garbage littered around the campground. I understand that people should clean up after themselves, but it is also up to the staff to ensure the grounds are properly maintained. After people checked out, I noticed that no one came around to ensure that the lot was clean before the next person checked in. The dumpster was overflowing for days, and still was not picked up by the time I left. On the only time the bathroom was cleaned in the 5 days I was here, I watched the cleaning staff ignore the garbage that was sitting around the bathroom facility. Eventually, my boyfriend picked it up himself because it was obvious the staff was not going to. Not a good first experience of this campground and probably...
Read moreVery pleasant and quiet State Park out of the way. Well maintained and cared for. The trails are nicely cleared and well marked. The campground was well-kept and the spaces weren't right on top of each other. The horse camp area looked like the rest of the park, well-kept. Glad to see sturdy corrals and ties for the horses already in place, you don't see that in the east. Only two complaints: one being the mosquitoes and bugs in general (but understood being set surrounded by a bunch of water) and two being the speed at which people drive through the park. There are kids around and playing, riding bike, etc; excessive speed is dangerous. The speed limit within the park should be strictly reinforced. All-in-all a great state park, I will gladly go back for a...
Read moreThis has been our favorite South Dakota State Park for a long time. We like the remoteness of it, but it also has a bunch of things to do. It has the new(er) south campground, so there's usually a space available (just not as much shade yet at the newer sites). There are several cabins if you don't feel like tenting it. Other things to do: swim beach, sand volleyball, nature trails, fishing (dock or shore fishing if you don't have a boat), canoe/kayak rentals (recommend Mortimer's Slough for quieter waters on a windy day), and a nice disc golf course. This park is well-maintained and we've always had good service there. They offer firewood for sale and free sports equipment and game...
