Beautiful examples of a Maritime Forest. I absolutely loved it, but it's not for everyone. Plenty of signage installed along the trail of common flora and fauna. Also aspects of teaching about conservation. Not a very long loop, but again there are some not as interesting portions of the trail. It can be humid, windless, and a little buggy at times. The trail passes through different aspects of Maritime Forest (secondary dunes, marsh, etc.). It has a pretty view of the sound from marshland, but I wish the trail made it all the way to the sound. Wear big...

Nobody warns you about how terrifyingly aggressive the deerflies/horseflies (hard to tell with them in your ears and hair) in these woods are lol. Bug spray did nothing to stop them swarming us the entire mile. Running did nothing to slow their pursuit. Enter at your own risk.

Also we turned left at a fork in this poorly-marked trail and accidentally ended up on a part of the trail that was blocked off (at an earlier segment) due to hurricane damage.

So, overall, the trail sucked and I think I have a phobia of these mysterious...

We visited in early April during a really wet and rainy week. The trail was basically impassable after a few hundred yards. We tried to go in both directions on the loop and couldn't get far. The standing water on the trail was just too deep to want to get into when it was already cool and wet. There appeared to be a nice variety of trees and shrubs and the trail was well shaded from what little we could get to. I would try it again if I went back just to see...

Nice trail thru the dune woods. The trail splits into a loop at the boardwalk so if you follow the all trails route to the right to the marsh overlook. You can then continue to the left and it will loop back around to the boardwalk. The trail is not marked well but there are several nature plaques along the way. It was a bit buggy and some muddy spots on our trip.

This place was pretty but got really muddy fast. Hugs were not too bad, and we saw a lizard (possibly an Anole). Definitely was a nice hike for what we did. Would recommend as a nice stop to make after the ferry ride!
