So while driving around Amish country yesterday, hubby mentioned a railroad museum he wanted to see. He knew nothing about it except that it was in Sugarcreek and that it was supposed to be a MUST SEE for railroad enthusiasts. So I googled it and it came up right away, was open and had a tour starting at 2! I suggested we go, and so we did, and… OH MY!!! It contains what must be close to the WORLD’S LARGEST COLLECTION of steam locomotives and diesel engines, railroad cars, tools and machinery! It’s a working Roundhouse, and a working machine shop where restoration experts bring new acquisitions up to code and keep the others in good working order! This place is amazing! There are millions of dollars worth of things to see! It is fully funded by the Jerry & Laura Jacobson Foundation! Quite a unique place in the middle of farm country and across the street from an Amish school! The tour takes 90 minutes. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes! I do not recommend the tour for small children as it is a lot of history and not a safe place...

The Age of Steam is a very impressive museum. We were told this is the largest private collection of steam engines in the US and I believe that. The roundhouse tour lasts over an hour. The guide will tell you everything you wanted to know about steam engines (sometimes too much as it can get technical and small children might lose interest). This is a working museum as they are restoring many of the trains on site as well. In addition, for certain events, you can ride a passenger steam engine. This was a little dissapointing as the train doesn't travel very far before reversing and repeats this maneuver a second time. You do not leave the yard. In addition to trains, the scheduled event celebrated the locomotives role in military. Many WW2 displays were set up in honor of army and navy. If you are a historical buff or train enthusiast, this is the place to see. In addition, there was a shuttle from the parking lot to the...

Great visual and historical private collection “not hands on”. Guided tours only by knowledgeable staff of front of equipment while in covered roundhouse, as the guides don’t walk around the units only in the front of them, disappointed. Liabilities waivers must be signed before your tour of property. You are able to see numerous diesel locomotives from 100 yards away and a newly built storage facility for numerous unseen varieties of railroad cars from the same distance. Maybe some day the complete collection will be available to view. To make the visit more appealing you could have a locomotive outside with various cars attached that guest would have access to at their own leisure. Liability waivers signed why no have hands on experience. These trains were built to be outside and enjoyed such as the experience you get at The Mad River Railroad Museum. Thank for sharing your beautiful museum of historic...

Great place. We went on a special day, so there were steam tractors too!

October 21, 2020 was my fifth visit in as many years to AoS, and each visit simply gets better. This latest adventure was one of their Blue Flag tours and AoS staff really did a great job creating a hands-on experience in several aspects of locomotive preservation, repair, and operation. Participants viewed or tried their hands at stenciling, turning a work piece in a lathe, needle-scaling, lubing freight car journal boxes, and dead-weight testing of pressure gauges. Rides in the cabs of both diesel and steam locomotives capped the visit. Hats off to Bill (pressure gauge testing), Bill (stenciling), Dan (tour guide), Ashley (tour guide), Denny (diesel loco engineer), and others (whose names I did not get). AoS is a NATIONAL treasure that deserves continued support. A visit there will not disappoint.
