Barnes Preserve is my favorite place to walk. I almost always see a few other people, and nature never disappoints! The walkway is paved, flat, and well maintained in all seasons, so it's great for folks who have mobility issues. There is plenty of parking between the two lots, but only one is wheelchair friendly. The only downside is, like most other parks, there are no restrooms available in the colder months, and even in the warmer months, the only restroom is a disabled friendly port a potty.

I absolutely love visiting Barnes Preserve. It's a great little park with a solid amount of walking trails, all of which are paved. The walk down to the pond might be a challenge to young ones and those who are mobility impaired, but they're in the works to get that updated and paved in the next year. It's a great place to go take a quick walk or have a picnic. Plus in the spring and summer months you get loads of flowers and even the chance to see some very busy (and buzzy) pollinators 😉.

Small nature preserve that goes through overgrown fields and a wooded area. There is a paved trail that is about a mile long. The whole hiking trail is level. There also are many benched along the way. We saw quite a bit of milkweed and red sumac along the trail. Also, there were many birds for those who are birdwatchers. There is also a pond midway through the hike. It is a very nice trail and setting for those who want a short hike.

This park is ok. I'm assuming there is a very limited budget for maintenance and future development. My comments are not criticism directed at anyone associated with the oversight or management of the park. To address these or any improvements that I'm sure the steward's of the park would like to do takes money. There is definitely evidence development of the park with the pavilion, paved trails, culverts and drainage.

I recommend they keep at least a 3' mowed (short) median on each side of the paved trails. This would be a great benefit for dog walkers, the main reason being that the green space is engulfed in poison oak (or ivy), which grows out into the paved trail and/or minimally maintained medians that exists. Walking a dog that wants to walk in the grass will inevitably result with the transfer of poison ivy to your dog and then you, or your car seats, couch, bed, etc.

I am also not a fan of the wooden planks that have been constructed off of the natural trail. While it's a novel concept, the execution isn't practical. These uneven walks are more likely to cause trips and falls than the natural trail. Also, for dog walkers, these planks are very accommodating. If this was done to address muddy and wet trails, mulch would prove more effective, less costly.

I is a large pond in this park off of a back natural path, but unfortunately it is not worth going back there because there is no access to walk around the pond, and barely any to view it. There's about a 50' gap in the weeds and a bench to look over algae.

I am grateful this park is here and think it is a valuable benefit to our area. I appreciate all of the efforts that have gone into the reserve and look forward to future...

★★★★★ Hidden Gem in Wooster!

Barnes Preserve is a beautiful natural oasis just minutes from downtown Wooster. As a frequent visitor, I'm always impressed by the well-maintained trails and diverse ecosystems.

Highlights: • Easy, scenic hiking trails suitable for all skill levels • Tranquil pond with a convenient viewing platform • Abundant wildlife - great for bird watching! • Educational signage about local flora and fauna • Clean, well-kept facilities

Whether you're looking for a quick nature walk or a longer outdoor adventure, Barnes Preserve delivers. It's especially gorgeous in fall when the leaves change color.

Don't forget to check out the butterfly garden near the parking area - it's a riot of color in summer!

This preserve is truly a local treasure. Kudos to the Wayne County Park District for maintaining such a wonderful space for the community to...
