Historic Root Road Covered Bridge — Attraction in Ohio

Root Road Covered Bridge spans the east branch of the Ashtabula River. The Bridge was built in 1868 with a Town latice truss and has creek stone abutments. A concrete pier was built in 1983. The Root Road Covered Bridge is 97-feet long. In 1963 the Bridge was in danger of collapse due to age and severe weather. Temporarily, guy wires were installed and the load limit was reduced. In 1982-1983, the Bridge was restored. This restoration consisted of the following: 1) jacking up the Bridge 18 inches, 2) building one concrete abutment, 3) adding a concrete center pier, 4) new floor beams and flooring, 5) new laminated girders, and 6) new siding and guardrails. The major advantage of the restoration was that the Bridge can now carry large trucks. The Root Road Covered Bridge has a shingled roof and newly painted siding and portals.
