Stillwater is a great place to go hiking and walking! I’m so happy that it’s in my area because it’s such a good place to have fun at. You can fish, hike, and play in the river (in a certain area). In the area where a lot of people are playing in the water and soaking in the sunlight, I like to go minnow catching and crawdad hunting. The minnows are SO abundant in the area it’s crazy and the crawdads aren’t to hard to find either. So it gives me a fun game to play trying to catch them. After I’m done with them I just release them back in the water and head home. The reserve also has a couple of shelters, including one that they recently added that comes with places to put your pots and I’m pretty sure there are outlets on the support beams of the structure. So it’s a cool place to have a family gathering or a birthday party! But on to hiking. About 2-3 years ago they added a suspension bridge over the river so you can more easily access the Maple Ridge portion of the reserve. I just love to stop in the middle of the bridge to look at the fish, usually decently sized coy, lazily swimming below me. So the suspension bridge that they added is great! But about the trails, the actual material they used is gravel, so if you don’t want the annoying rocks getting into your shoes and poking at your feet then I’d wear tight-closing shoes. But it’s great they’re using gravel because it’s more economically safe than asphalt or concrete. In conclusion, Stillwater Prairie Reserve is a GREAT place to bring the family to enjoy some of Ohio’s amazing scenery. To have fun with the family. And to ENJOY yourself. Thank you so much for reading and I hope you can get out there and look...
Read moreThis is a very nice park by western Ohio standards, particularly for those of us with very limited parks in Darke County (The Park is in Miami County) It's got a lot of very well maintained trails and clear signage. It has a wide variety of "looks", wooded, creek, pond, marsh, prairie, etc. The suspension bridge is worth a visit all by itself, but I'm sure most people will enjoy the walk to and from it very much. Oh, probably the nicest park restroom building I've ever seen, reserva le pavilions for gatherings, large grassy area for games. There's probably even more pluses. Yes, I'm raving, it's that good...
Read moreThe area is so beautiful and clean. I went with a group of kiddos as a chaperone for the school and was entertained myself by the wonderful discussion and display over the different types of species we would find in the water. They taught the kiddos what lives in clean water, what can survive in between, and what can live in dirty water. The different species that have been right under our noses everytime we play in the creeks or rivers. Now we know what to look for and how to help protect them and our water sheds:). Thanks to fantastic crew of naturalists....
