Very difficult hike for me (I do not consider myself an avid hiker- it was easier for my friends that are, though) but one of the best for fall foliage in the state! Definitely get there early- we were there by 10:00 on a Sunday and still had to park about 1/2 a mile away from the lot. The trail begins at 4,900’ elevation and is 6,950’ at it’s highest, so be well prepared. Take lots of water and some snacks (electrolyte-packed snacks and drinks are really helpful as the elevation and constant incline will get to you if you’re not used to it). The clockwise trail is VERY steep uphill, so if you struggle with uphill climbs like I do, go the counterclockwise route (I’m thankful we went counterclockwise!). The climb seems to go on forever, but the views are gorgeous and well worth it! Hiking poles are definitely recommended- they help tremendously on the steep hills. We hiked it at the peak of the foliage on Oct 3, 2021...
Read moreBest hike ever!!! Did this on 10/1 and liked it so much came back with my friend the next weekend on 10/ 8 and it was just as amazing! I went clockwise the first time and counterclockwise the second time. I think clockwise is way better for views and the way that you see everything but going against the way everyone else is going and having to let big groups of people go by got kind of old going clockwise. Actual hiking time was 3.5 hours the first time and 3 hours the second time. spent about an hour and a half at the top. it's definitely worth it at the top to go past everyone and climb up the small cliff where no one goes and it's quiet. there's so many people. got there at 9 both times and had to park way down the road. absolutely...

It is an excellent place to see fall colors, including Golden Larches. The pass is high, over 6000', and can experience rapid changes in weather. Splendid views of Black Peak and surrounding North Cascades peaks. A Northwest Forest pass is required. There are toilets at the trailhead. If you are planning on backpacking here, be sure to check in with the ranger station if you plan on camping without North Cascades National Park, as the park boundary is just...
