This location is the old service station, not the restaurant that is 5 miles (8km) to the west. There is no longer a business at this location, but it is a point of interest along Route 66.

There are books that tell of Lucille's big heart and how she helped poor travelers find their way west on Route 66. This is not one of those stories. I grew up in the town nearby. Locals knew Lucille as the "cranky but nice" lady that owned the service station out on the highway. She sold fireworks in the summer, partly for the money, but also so she could see the delight on kids' faces as we studied our purchases.

Lucille had a monkey. She kept it diapered so it wouldn't make a mess of her business. It was part of what made her unique.

Her station was known for having the coldest beer in 3 counties. One of the unique aspects of her station was that she had a grandfathered "consume on premises" license. Her loyal customers would buy a six-pack and sit in the back of the store to talk about the weather or the wheat harvest at the end of a long day.

For a little more interest, Lucille was laid to rest at the Hydro Masonic Cemetery, 3.5 miles north of the service station on State Highway 58 and County Road 990. (N35.579621, W98.577888) Her grave marker is white stone and is distinct from the neighbors, engraved with the Route 66...

LUCILLES HISTORIC HIGHWAY GAS STATION Route 66 - Hydro, Oklahoma August 1993, 1994, 1995 While on several Route 66 road trips from California in my 1959 Cadillac, a stop at Lucille Hamons Gas Station was always a highlight of the journey. She would tell her stories of life on the old road at her gas station with such detail and and animation. At that time, a daily stream of visitors from around the world would stop in to see the 'Mother of the Mother Road'. She would enthusiastically share her collection of memorabilia with the visitors who would buy Route 66 souvenirs and t-shirts that she had for sale. Not to mentions her offering up for purchase what she said she was known for locally; 'having the coldest beer in Oklahoma'. Absolutely wonderful and cherished memories indeed. It is wonderful that after her passing, the property was renovated and continues to be a very popular stop for those traveling on Route 66. Highly...

My husband and I used to stop in here alot when he was an over the road truck driver. I bought a Route 66 purse from Lucille ( still have it) I don't know when she stopped doing her newspaper but I own a couple issues where she would mention visitors I the next edition after their visit . She also had a hand in the Route 66 deal in Germany. She was a very interesting person and so knowledgeable. I'm so sorry to hear of her passing and thankful for the new owner and his tribute to Lucille. Lucille's Roadhouse in nearby Weatherford. When I dig out those newspapers I'll be sure...

Traveling down some of the original Route 66 road and stop by Lucille's Historic Station. Found it interesting that the State Department had put up fence along the interstate to keep people from pulling off to her station. Now the station set empty not open for the people on the road anymore. I'm sure Mrs. Lucille would be disappointed. Mrs. Lucille is buried at the Hydro Cemetery about 2 mile from her station. Wonder if any of them Armstrong buried behind her worked in the store.
