This place is a joke. You will get lost. Most of the trails don't even have signs. Wabanaki trail badly needs to be mowed, the grass is a foot tall and there are overgrown bushes with thorns to snag your arms on, and fallen trees blocking the path.. doesn't anyone clean these up? In all our hiking, there was only 1 sign with a map, and it only shows 2 trails on it. So it's useless. There's no map legend, no "You are here". A child must've made this map. Many trail intersections don't have signs labeling the paths so it's easy to get lost. I tried pulling up a map on my phone, but there's no service out there and Hirduno's website doesn't even appear in Google search results lol. None of Hirduno trails appear on OpenStreetmap either.. how hard is it for someone to index these? Stop wasting all your money endlessly redesigning your webpage and start spending it on signage, better maps, and maintaining the trails. Very disappointing. Bring bug spray. A lot of it.

It's open Dawn's to Dusk. Except for being under the apparent path of a private pilot flight school, this place is peaceful & serene. Crickets, frogs, birds, owls, bubbling stream, wind blowing through the trees and the sound of your footsteps on the pine-needle or crushed-stone paths are all you'll hear. There is educational signage and places to sit in the Pond area. No seating on the wilderness trails, but there are directional path markers. Hiking shoes or Gym footwear are all you need, but I would not recommend sandals or flip flops. You can drive or walk into the area (I drove in) or if you want to take children across the street to a section for kids, its better to park at the entrance --small area right off the paved main road.

Wonderful set of well marked trails. Saw Bald Eagles, Wood Ducks, numerous Red Squirrels and chipmunks and many species of plants. You can drive into a parking area within the preserve at gate #1 despite the fact it says no motorized vehicles. Very glad to see hunting is prohibited, and no pets either, making it a real preserve. Lots of shorter trails and even some bathrooms near parking area. Free.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5 stars

Hirundo Wildlife Refuge is truly a hidden gem in our community! This beautiful sanctuary has become my absolute favorite local place for birdwatching, leisurely walks, and paddling.

The well-maintained trails wind through a stunning natural landscape, providing the perfect setting for peaceful and rejuvenating outings. The trails are not too difficult, making it accessible for people of all ages and fitness levels. I've seen a few people complain about getting lost/lack of signage but I didn't have any trouble. Just grab a map from the kiosk in the parking lot and follow the colored blazes on the trees.

The diverse birdlife here is a real treat for birdwatchers. Every visit feels like a new adventure as you never know what feathered friends you might encounter. Spring and Fall migration are especially great here.

The staff and volunteers are friendly, incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the wildlife and the refuge's mission. Whether you're an avid birder, a nature enthusiast, or just looking for a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life, Hirundo Wildlife Refuge is the perfect place. I highly recommend it to anyone seeking a serene, educational, and enriching experience in the heart of...
