A magical forest setting is the back drop for this awesome churn! The mighty Deschutes tears through a lava chute. Not really a waterfall in the flesh, but the river's roar and fury is absolutely mindblowing. There are actually two viewpoints ... the main one, and a hidden spot above the falls found by hiking the main trail leading to the Lava Lands. Benham is even lovelier in the winter after a fresh snowfall, but it requires an often 3-mile slog through deep snow. Here are the images in case you can't get here during the winter. A Bend must-see.

Easy 1 mile in and out trail. We met young families with toddlers and babies in strollers to older couples like us all enjoying this nice wide trail. Only when you get close to the falls does the trail narrow and becomes a little rocky. The falls, more like a series of rapids, are beautiful. People jockey to to get pictures as it's crowded. There is a free parking lot close to the trail head. Also a porta- potty at parking lot. No water source or bathroom facilities along trail.

This is a gorgeous and easy hike through Ponderosa pine along the Deschutes river to the rapids known as Benham Falls. Great for hikers and bikers, families and seniors. Lots of great photo spots. We were there on Oct 28, 2022. The river was down quite a bit but still exciting and loud. Not very crowded. Visitor center at Lava Beds is closed for the season, but we walked part of the trail behind it and marveled at the butte and all...
