The Grave Creek Covered Bridge was built in 1920 as part of the Pacific Highway project. It was constructed by Elmer J Nelson at the cost of $21,128. It is the last covered bridge that remains in Josephine County, Oregon.
The site is located along the historic Applegate Trail in which the first wagon train traveled in 1846. Then called Woodpile Creek, a 16 year old died of Typhoid fever and was buried nearby.
It was renamed Grave Creek in 1852 with a land claim by James H Twogood (Grave Creek Ranch) in memory of Martha Leland Crowley's death.

Originally called Woodpile Creek. In 1846 one of the 1st emigrant wagon trains camped next to the creek overnight. One of its members, a 16 year old girl died of typhoid fever and was buried next to the creek, thus the name Grave Creek.
It became part of the California Oregon stage line in 1860 and the Applegate Wagon Trail. The small town of Leland emerged, which is no longer there except a few markers. President Hayes and his family spent the night here in 1880.
In 1920 as part of the Pacific Highway project, the bridge was built at a cost of $21000.
