Awesome, lower trafficked hike compared to the Wallowa Lake Trailhead. We did a little over 14 miles and it was exactly what we hoped for from the Eagle Cap Wilderness: A few things to be aware of: There were multiple avalanches or major flood blowouts along the trail. Also, one of the streams coming down the mountain has redirected down the trail for a short distance. You will have to cross some significant streams and ford a knee-deep river at about 5 miles in. Consider bringing something you can use for traction while crossing, a towel, and plenty of foot powder. The water is extremely cold and the river rocks are a bit slippery/loose. About mile 9 there's an old pioneer settlement and the alpine lakes are about 12ish. If you're just going for a day hike and plan on going more than 10 miles, I'd recommend starting early in the morning, wear sunscreen, and bring no less than 1.5 liters of water. There are definitely some exposed portions of the trail and it can pretty warm on summer afternoons even at...
Read moreGreat early summer hike with a wide variety of wildflowers. The main trail is very well maintained and our younger children did great without too much assistance. There is a branch off the main trail not far from the parking lot which leads to a waterfall. This side trail is poorly maintained and crosses slick gravel washes but we found it worth the extra effort for...
Read moreMy wife and I decided to backpack this trail as our first ever trail! Best decision ever!!! It's such a beautiful trail not to crazy but just challenging enough. So many beautiful views lots of places to camp and refill water from small running melt off. We hiked about 17 in 17 out and enjoyed all of it! I would definitely recommend downloading an app with a map if it wasn't for a map we would have gotten lost. I highly...
