The Sheep Rock Unit of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument should be the first stop on the tour of the three units because the visitor center there provides an extensive description and explanation of the geology of the area and how the formations present in the three units were formed and when. The Sheep Rocknunit is located along route 26 where you can see geological formations exposing the layers or strata that formed on top of each other over a very long time period. First off you can watch a post grad paleontologist work on fossils in the lobby which was very impressive to me. The exhibits were very well thought through and presented. I enjoyed seeing actual fossils instead of casts, or it appeared that way. There is a wealth of knowledge to be learned here. Fun...
