Pretty good. I was told about the great many animals and plants and mostly animals around the area. There are many different birds around the many ponds, lakes, and reservoirs. The area is surrounded by mountains, most notably the diablos to the east. It's green for the most part in the valley area between Winters ridge and the diablos because the artesian springs that feed the many bodies of water. The artesian springs are supplied with lots of water from the surrounding mountains, like the diablos. There are pictoglifs and old settlement remains from the natives that lived at the shores of ancient lakes that covered the now marsh lands. There are wild horses that come from east of the diablos that sometimes, when the diablos are dry, come to drink from artesian springs. There are many trails and roads that lead to the diablos that you can take a vehicle like a side-by-side or quads, a trip over the summer lake area to the diablos is best done in a party with multiple vehicles. I heard quite a lot about summer lake over my two day trip there, and even more about the diablos.

Birds birds and more birds. I saw a hawk hunting, geese honking and ducks galore. Best on a bike or on foot if possible.

This place is a birders paradise! Be ready to combat the bugs. But the diversity of species is incredible and worth it!

Large number of birds migrate from March to May. Several species of geese, ducks, grebes, as well as sparrows, swallows, sand hill cranes, herons, and raptors. And a variety of birds stop by near the head quarters, Summer Lake Lodge, and Summer Lake store, near the rest area, along Hwy. 31. Trumpeter swans and tundra swans also. Great history of the expedition of Kit Karson and company. And why it’s call Summer Lake, which lays at the foot...

Lots of wildlife around, and not many people which is a plus for me as I was there to photograph wildlife. Would definitely recommend something with a bit of ground clearance. Had a great time photographing...
