We loved our week long stay at Tomoka. Clean and serene....great value for the money too! Was just under $200 for 7 nights. The park is easy to navigate and the roads and trails are great for biking. It was an adventure exploring the park with our dog. We especially enjoyed the picnic areas near the river where we had the place to ourselves most days. Trees and riverfront were beautiful. We ended up with a really sunny campsite so I would call ahead for a recommended site if you need more shade. Our tent was a sauna. The entrance staff was super friendly and helpful. They are patrolling the park quite regularly day and night. The bathrooms are being cleaned constantly. Try to steer clear when the tall skinny older gentleman is cleaning the restrooms. Felt like we were slowing his roll. They have a pretty boat launch area and a camp store right there. We were bummed when we found out we couldn't canoe with our large dog. Must be 60 pounds or under with a doggie lifevest. Will bring our own next time. We were told that it's best to go early AM when not so hot for best chance to see manatees and dolphins. Cool! Our only real complaint was the fact that the campstore was never open on time. They post an 8am open time. Multiple days we went early and the staff doesn't get there before 8 to be open on time. Was more like 8:15-8:30 each time. Always other people there waiting with us to start their day. Not the only ones frustrated. One guy gave up waiting and left. Also, while I was looking into alternate canoe rental stores, my girlfriend decided to do some work while waiting. She was the only one sitting at one of the 4 available tables in the store. She was politely advised by store staff (so she knew for the next time) that "laptops are not allowed", "for security reasons" (she told him she had her own internet ??). So not sure what that meant. Then he added "this is a vacation place, laptops don't fit with our theme". So you may want to leave your work and big dog at home, if you can! Other than that, great place and we would...
Read moreI liked it here. First time here. 4 stars says I liked it here. Worth noting... I tent camped in June in 200% humidity. Sleeping was miserable. That's on me. The closest bathroom was closed for repairs. That info would've been helpful to know when booking the site. Gotta admit, that peeved me. I had a crazy neighbor with 2 loose dogs that loved me. So much for getting away from it all! But... The 100 sites all looked nicely partially private. Water & Electric on site. Table. Firepit. My Site 56 was smaller than some I saw, but cozy and one I'd choose again. One thing about the campground worth noting is that it is separated from the rest of the state park. The only thing to do within walking distance is walk to the bathroom. And walk a little farther to the bathroom as my case was that weekend. The State Park is beautiful, but you must bike or drive to enjoy it. The Park: Beautiful. There are lots of waterside spots to fish, picnic, and put in a kayak or canoe. The Outpost: What a cool spot! It's definitely a great camp store and spot to kick back, rent a canoe/kayak, book a boat tour, or just chill with a cold beer. Totally wish this was within comfortable walking distance to the camping area! I paddled 4 miles out into the Halifax River. Saw dolphins. Bird life. Jumping mullet. Super enjoyable! Four Stars. I hovered over Three Stars. I do think I will return after trying other nearby campgrounds first. (Princess something might be next?) Will definitely do it in cooler weather and will call first to check the status of restrooms and...
Read moreThis review is regarding the campground only. They only sell firewood out of a store which is closed Tuesdays and Wednesday. This means, if you don’t bring any, you have to go to town to get wood. I called every publix, Winn-Dixie, tractor supply, Lowe’s, Home Depot, in the area and they were all sold out.
Most of the state campgrounds I’ve stayed at in Florida and elsewhere sell their firewood at the ranger station. Additionally, you can often buy it from the campground host. That’s not the case here and it’s none of this info was readily available online so I figured I’d post it.
As others have mentioned the bathrooms are dirty but I don’t really mind that as much because camping is dirty in general.
They also didn’t hand out maps because of covid (but still gave us our permit).
This was our third location on our tent camping vacation and without a doubt was the worst simply due to the firewood. If the issues I’ve outlined above don’t apply to you and the privately owned store is open you will likely enjoy the experience. We just had no idea this would be the case so it was frustrating for us because we could have simply brought wood....
