A really beautiful, peaceful and serene place to immerse yourself in one of the small remaining slivers of the “Big Woods” of Minnesota! SNA’s (Scientific & Natural Areas) seem to be far less well-known and definitely less visited than state parks or many regional parks. These places are absolute treasures that we are really fortunate to have preserved thanks to the MN DNR and the former private landowners (in many cases) who passed it on to the state. I came here yesterday and since it was spring, I’d recommend you wear shoes that you don’t care about getting muddy or wet of course plus it’s helpful to take a photo of the trail map at the start so you can orient yourself as you make your way through the park. Read moreA wonderful place to see old growth forest near the cities. It must look wonderful once the leaves come in, but I visited in early April and it was very sparse and open without the vegetation. Google Maps takes you to the parking lot, and you cross the street to get into the SNA.
If you have a dog, be careful - though they are supposed to be on a leash, many people let their dogs roam free whether or not they are well-behaved.
There are designated trails, but they are dirt, can be covered by downed trees, and are generally "rustic". If you have mobility issues, consider bringing hiking sticks.

There are so many places to walk you can easily avoid other people or social distance when you cross paths with other nature lovers. Very dog friendly as well. Very hilly but not horrible hills to climb. The trails are not paved so it can be muddy, so wear appropriate shoes.
