Big Stone National Wildlife Refuge Auto Tour — Attraction in Ortonville

Absolutely GORGEOUS area. Loved the auto tour and the loop walks. The longer loop was a great adventure in tracking where the trail was, but added to the enjoyment. Glad we had on hiking shoes and long pants. A very wide variety of prairie plants and many different varieties of birds, ducks and bugs. So glad the groups united to preserve this unique property. A really underrated park. Western Minnesota is a lot prettier than people give it credit for and this park is a great example. There's so many spots in the refuge where it really feels like you've stepped back in time to see the region before all the prairies became farms. It's really fun to see wild cacti growing among all the boulders...

What a great drive. It is paved the entire length and is just outside the town of Ortonville. There is numerous places to stop and bathrooms along the way. Great views of water, prairie and granite outcrops. There is some good hiking along the way along the river valley. Lots of wildlife to see you can spend a quick trip here...
