My five summers at Kamp Kohut were truly life changing. I arrived at Kamp as a young 18 year old college student from Texas with no camp experience. Kohut was magical for me. I met so many amazing young people from all over the world. It was enriching to meet so many kids and counselors from so many places. I was hooked after that first summer. I had to take some summers off to finish college and begin my career in education. But I was always drawn back to Kamp.
The facilities were beautiful. And the weather in Maine is by far more pleasant than summers in Texas. I enjoyed spending all time outside and on the beautiful lake. It is magical to feel cool breezes in the summer months and swim in crystal clear waters. Neither of those things are possible in Houston!
I always felt safe at Kamp. Physically and emotionally. I was homesick my first summer but, I engulfed myself in Kamp and trying new things. I felt safe at Kamp to try the climbing wall and safe to try sailing and watersking. I had never attempted these activities and it was empowering to attempt, and succeed, at them! Even in my 20's! I would send my children to Kohut without hesitation!
The leadership team at Kohut is fabulous. I always felt part of the Kohut family. Lisa and Dan are remarkable people. I always felt appreciated and included on a professional and...
Read moreI am forever indebted to Kamp Kohut. I was a camper for six years and a counselor for four years. I knew I wanted to be a counselor based on how much I loved and looked up to my counselors. It was a different experience filled with new responsibility, but having had the experience as a camper, I was motivated to make the experience as safe and special as I had felt years before. As a counselor, I was blown away by how wonderful the campers truly are and how much I wanted to spend time with them. I learned key leadership skills as I worked my way up to become the head of the Swimming Program. Through this work I became increasingly impressed by the seamlessly run summers, which took an enormous amount of behind the scenes work by Lisa, Steve, Joe and the staff members.
Kamp Kohut played a key role in my determining to pursue a career helping kids and I am now finishing my first year as a grad student in school psychology. I am forever grateful for the opportunity of self-discovery and the interpersonal and leadership skills I learned as a camper and a counselor. I am still friends with the campers I first shared a cabin with those (nearly 20?!) years ago. We continue to support and help each other into our adulthoods, forever bonded by those magical summers on...
Read moreMy daughter, Katherine, attended Kamp Kohut from ages 9-15. She loved Kohut. Kohut became a family for her. She knew everyone's name, where they were from and shared many experiences with Kampers who were from different parts of the United States and the world. In fact, one of her best friends is a bunkmate from Belgium.
Katherine grew in so many ways while at Kohut. She explored new activities like rock climbing, water skiing and rowing crew. She learned how to collaborate and work as a team with her bunkmates. She also learned responsibility for her clothes and personal items. Katherine loved the overnights, the themed all-kamp parties, flagpole, Kollege Days and Blue and White Day. Katherine grew socially, emotionally and athletically while at Kohut.
Katherine would like to be a Kounselor at Kohut when she is old enough.
As her Mom, I highly recommend Kamp Kohut. I give Kamp...
