Kincaid Mounds, in southern Illinois just across the Ohio River from Paducah, KY and is definitely worth a visit. This site sits near a slough of the Ohio River that, at the time of habitation, may have been an active channel of the river. The site is situated between the confluences of the Cumberland and Tennessee Rivers with the Ohio, making it integral to the system of continent-reaching trade the Mississippians practiced. As such, this site would have been very prominent in the trade that inhabitants of the sites local to me as practiced in the Cumberland watershed - as such this sight has obvious regional importance for study, but I feel it has relevance to the wider Mississippian world as well.
It is a short country drive to the site, on small and at times unpaved roads, from Paducah and I-24. I highly recommend...
Read moreNative Americans inhabited this area of Massac County and built mounds. The second Saturday in October is the best time to visit. Many people that have studied the area and worked to find even more information meet with the public to share that what they know. You can visit anytime with information plaques to read to learn more. Be prepared that you are several miles from public restrooms and gas stations. It is located several miles south of Unionville Rd. It is a gravel road in one section. I wish the state would invest a little more in the area and make it accessible more and interesting other than...
Read moreBe aware to get to this location you have to drive through a LONG red gravel road. The gravel tore my little car up. I had to go 25 mph in and out the whole way which it was a long drive. The mounds were cool to see but it just had one little parking area and a tiny observation deck to view from afar. It's right up against probate property and you can't walk around due to that. Otherwise the history is interesting to read about! Apparently it's the first civilization in Central Illinois. I don't think it was worth the drive for me but maybe to others it will be. It's kinda cool to say that we...
