I've loved the Palo Alto Baylands since we moved here in the 1970s. There used to be a yacht harbor out there and it seemed to be invested in and maintained pretty well.
Currently, as in 2024, there has not been much investment or maintance out at the Baylands.
The description here says there is a restroom and there is, but it is unpleasant and disgusting even though mostly what it needs it some scrubbing and painting and monitoring.
Byxbee itself is a place I like to walk and run because the paths are not concrete and the air is fresh - except for the days when the sewage treatment plant is overloaded. It is a nice 5 mile distance from Byxbee to Shoreline in Mtn View out on the levees - where there is no restrooms I might add.
There is some wildlife out there, hawks, non-poisonous snakes, beetles, lots of birds, and rarely but I have seen skunks and even fox out there once.
My biggest criticism, aside from the uncared for restroom facilities is the closeness to the PA airport and the loudness of the airplanes landing. I often am listening to music or audiobooks and often for 10-20 minutes at a time with a queue of airplanes coming in I cannot hear music or spoken work with my earphones inserted.
I'd just say I yearn for the day when Palo Alto closes the airport and we can develop the nature of the wonderful Baylands resources...
Read moreByxbee Park is a hidden gem for nature lovers, especially those interested in bird watching and leisurely walks. The park offers a peaceful and picturesque setting that is ideal for immersing yourself in the beauty of nature.
The park's trails provide a peaceful setting for long, slow walks, allowing visitors to fully appreciate the surrounding flora and fauna.
One aspect that sets Byxbee Park apart from others is the availability of restrooms along the trails. This thoughtful addition is very useful as it provides convenience and comfort for visitors, especially those who may need to use the toilets while in the park. This is a small but important detail that enhances the overall impression.
Another notable feature of the park is the placement of benches. They are thoughtfully placed slightly off the trails, providing visitors with a sense of privacy while still allowing them to relax and enjoy the beauty of the surroundings. This design solution allows you to spend quiet moments of contemplation and...
Read moreThis is one of my favorite places to go for a long walk. You can walk from Byxbee to Shoreline and almost feel like you aren't on the Peninsula. Way less crowded than walking the Dish. Tons of waterfowl -- I've seen flocks of pelicans almost doing synchronized ballet moves, lots of snowy egrets and various duck-type birds. Very peaceful and great views of water and sky.
The downsides: this is not a place to walk when it's hot. There is ZERO shade. Great on an overcast day, though. Trails are all unpaved, which I like, but it's good to be aware of, especially if it's been rainy, because there will be mud. The baylands can get stinky at various times of year -- it's not crossing the Dumbarton bad, but it's not pleasant either. About 2/3 of the way from Byxbee toward Shoreline there are often some pretty big clouds of gnats for a while. Hit the bathroom at the beginning, since there isn't another one till you get...
