The Lapointe-Krebs house (built in 1757) is the oldest house in Mississippi, and may be the oldest remaining French Colonial vernacular building between the Appalachian and the Rocky Mountains. Built in the French Colonial era, this house served as a frontier family home sixty years before Mississippi achieved statehood. It was occupied by the LaPointe and Krebs family’s decendants until the early 20th century. The house is open for viewing following a 2014-2021 restoration effort funded by the Mississippi Legislature, MDAH, Jackson County, and The LaPointe-Krebs Foundation.
The adjacent Museum was beautifully redesigned and opened in 2016. The design, development and construction of the LaPointe Krebs Museum was a work of over two years and the design of this modest museum garnered two international design awards for the Jackson based design company Kyomi. The museum exhibit focuses on the history of this site, as well as the history of the surrounding community. It includes many of the old artifacts/ relics from the old museum which had been closed since before Hurricane Katrina.

Read moreI visited LaPointe-Krebs House on August 19th it was very interesting. As we entered the Museum a young man met us and greeted us with a warm welcome!! He let us sign in and took us on a little tour of the museum and listed some of the more interesting things of the family and the house!! We continued on our self guided tour of the property and found a man outside by the house working & he was mixing up a special mortar made out of oyster shells that was used to help build the home with. He talked to us a little about the history of the property and the house itself he also took us over to the old saw that they would have used in the day to build the house as well! We found it all very interesting!! I have really loved visiting a lot of the old homes around Mississippi and Mobile!! If you haven’t visited them it’s a must see especially if you have a large group or a group of students!! It would be a great history lesson learning about the history...
Read moreMy mother Etta Lee (Smith) McNeill (Honey) was raised in The Old Spanish Fort! My grandfather Robert Levi Smith married Ida Krebs after his first wife died and they moved to the Fort... They are both buried in the cemetery there! They lived there for many years... I have a little memorabilia that I offered to the Fort about 15 yrs. ago, but most was duplicates of what was already in the Fort! We go back there often, and take pictures of the Fort, my husband by the guns, etc... I love the peacefulness of the Fort, and have extremely good memories of having been raised in Pascagoula, where my mother could walk us kids to the beach in the morning and the Fort (lake) in the...
