I’ve been going to Calcareous since 2012 and it’s always a regular stop on my way down to Santa Barbara from SF.

It’s been sometime since I last visited (2019, pre pandemic) and just haven’t had a chance to come back since.

Pros:

Service was always good here, and I’m glad to say it’s remained so. Our staff were super helpful and accommodating. The pours were generous and the experience was great.

The setting / tasting room and its panoramic view of Paso is amazing. It’s tucked away from everything else making it a quiet retreat from a busy town, and a nice diversion without too much travel up the hillside from 101.

The flight poured today was decent. Four wines, three reds and one white, with an off menu bonus pour courtesy of the staff. It matches the caliber and quality I’ve come to expect from this winery. (Not having any of the Lily Blanc or Tres Violets on the flight was a misstep though, I felt; more on that later)

Unfortunately that’s where it ends for me.

The cons:

The tasting flight has doubled from $15 to $30 since the last time I was there in 2019. The number of pours remains the same.

I was shocked at this, but I assumed the benefit of the doubt given my prior years experience coming here.

Sadly, I don’t feel like the flight cost matched what was being poured that day.

The Lily Blanc and Tres Violets have always been standouts to me at this winery. Not having them on the menu this go around made the experience a little hollow. The server said it was due to them having sold out, and for that I’m happy; but what was put on the tasting menu didn’t really excite or get me wanting to walk away with a bottle.

In addition, the atmosphere has changed. What used to be a vibrant and chatty experience for me instead became one that was sterile, stiff, and perfunctory. The pours were fine, the staff were fine, but the salesmanship and experience connecting it all together fell flat. I don’t fault the staff for this at all; rather I attribute this to the culture shift that’s happened since my last visit.

Finally, and this is really just a personal thing, but the “no outside food” irked me.

It’s their prerogative not to allow outside food, and I don’t fault them for it. But it certainly has made me question whether it’s worth it to come back again.

My fondest memories of my numerous visits from 2012-2019 were getting to bring a delicious picnic with a variety of foods and cured meats to pair and have fun with the flight. We often ended up purchasing a glass or two on top of it all. I can assure you I felt no compulsion to do so on this most recent visit.

What the new Calcareous has done is completely commercialized the experience. We paid and tipped our staff, but I think it’s safe to say those will be the last dollars I spend at this winery for the...

While visiting the tasting room back in April I enjoyed the wine enough to order 12 bottles and have it shipped. As I was traveling extensively in April, they offered to delay the shipment until May 6th. On May 8th I received a notice from UPS that my order had shipped but it was being returned to sender due to a compliance issue on the part of Calcareous. I called to inquire and was advised they had no idea what the issue was but they would look into it and call me back. After two days went by with no returned call, I reached out to them again and left a detailed message with another request for someone to call me with an update… Another day goes by and another unreturned call… I will call them one more time and if the results are the same, I will canx the order and dispute the charge with AMEX… so terribly disappointing.

Update; today’s call (5/14/24) was handled with a higher level of customer service than what has been received up to this point. I spoke with Megan who looked into the details of my shipment and confirmed it was in route and should arrive tomorrow. Although there was no explanation as to why my calls were not returned or what the compliance issue was, she did apologize for the lack of customer care.

Update #2 (5/15/24) Received a call today from Calcareous to advise that everything I was told yesterday was not true. I will not be receiving my shipment of wine today. In fact it is being delivered back to the winery today because of the aforereferenced “Calcareous compliance issue.” The level of incompetence with this company is truly startling. Suffice it to say, I cancelled my order.

Great wine but their service after the...

Of the pluses, one can certainly note a beautiful view. We had a table booked, when booking we clarified whether certain dishes would be available, we were confirmed that everything would be. We were 5 people, two of whom are already 70+ and one is in a wheelchair. There were many free tables, the waitress said that we can take any table and they will bring us a wine list, and then a menu. After sitting for half an hour, we did not wait for anyone. Went to the bar to order a bottle of wine. Before that, they wanted to try it first, to which we were told that “buy and try”. I can't buy a pig in a poke. We asked the waiter to come to us and return to the table. We waited for another half an hour and no one came up, although they approached other tables around and served. Let's go find out again. It turned out that those dishes that we would like, will not be prepared today. We were just shocked by the service. There was nothing else to look forward to. Live music was already playing, we enjoyed it and left with nothing. Of course, I cannot recommend this place to visit. I give 2 stars, one for the view and one for the music.

Mixed review even with 4 stars. I joined Calcareous a few years ago and LOVE their wines. However, over the years and many visits, the service has gone downhill. I brought a group of 9 friends today for my 50th birthday. We had reservations at 11:00, and were 15 minutes late. Once seated, it took 10 minutes for someone to greet us and bring us wine. Our server Christian was great, but another lady seemed to have a chip on her shoulder about our group. Water was accidentally spilled on our table, and I went to hand Jackie (the employee) the wet menu. She acted like I just scolded her, and she rolled her eyes. It was rude and uncalled for. In addition to this, she moved one of our guests purses and was rude about moving it. If you're looking for a fun place, this isn't it. If you're looking for beautiful views and good wines, then it is your place. Just make sure to say you don't want Jackie, unless you love a rude server.

We went to this winery for lunch on a sunny Friday in late February. Wow did it blow all of our expectations away! Our server and wine expert was Brie, she was so caring and attentive to our needs. We took a long detoured route to enjoy driving through the beautiful countryside which left us feeling a little uneasy, within seconds she had sparkling water and crackers to settle us and proceeded to walk us through their offerings and menu. The view is absolutely amazing and their lunch is delicious. You have to get the parm fries!!! We got the 14oz steak and the beet and burrata salad. Both of which were to die, this was our first visit but we will certainly be back. We didn’t even do the tasting menu and Brie let us try her favorites alongside the bottle we purchased. 10/10.
