King’s Chair overlook at Oak Mountain State Park is my favorite go-to place when I’m not kayaking. There are several different ways to get there. The Blue trails is hilly and is 2 miles to KC. The Red Road to the North Red Blue connector trail is a relatively steady incline that avoids the up and down hills one hikes when taking the Blue trail and is 1.5 miles. For people wanting to avoid the hilly portion the North Red Blue connector is the approach. For people who want the cardiovascular workout take the Blue trail. When getting to the Blue #6 turn left and continue until the end of the access trail which will take you to the left side of a large rock. Walk around behind the large rock to the right side for the best and most spacious view which is awesome. If you are fortunate enough to be there when the KC photographer is there, he will gladly use your cell phone and make beautiful photos which document your experience at having achieved this beautiful overlook. I know of 4 engagements that have taken place while at this overlook. Another poster said it took 3 hours for them to get there, Ive broken 39 minutes when hustling up the Blue trail to this fantastic overlook. Normally it takes me...
Read moreThis overlook is so beautiful and absolutely worth the hike! It hard to believe this gem of an overlook is in little ol' Pelham, AL! The hike is pretty steep in the beginning, but levels out as long as you don't add the Eagle's nest overlook route to your hike. You should park at the parking lot across from the North Trailhead, and then take the blue route trail. Make sure to take a picture of the trail map at the beginning and pay attention to the helpful numerical markers along the trail so you can identify where you are. The only sign for "kings chair" isn't until you're less .5 miles from the overlook and there are no more intersections to navigate by that point, so the map is necessary! It costs $5 per person to get into Oak Mountain State Park for the day and the ticket they give you serves as a day pass to allow you to leave and return during the day. I suggest you pack a lunch and a few drinks and hit the lake after your hike to make the most...
Read morePretty physically challenging hike up to the "Kings Chair," but the view was well worth it for us. The actual hike along the trail is also very beautiful with many types of trees & plants along the way. We actually started our hike on the yellow trail and did a total of 10 miles, but I think the actual "Kings Chair" part of our hike on the blue trail was around 5 to 6 miles round trip. I would recommend this trip to anyone who is somewhat fit and able to climb some steep hills. Also, bring some water to drink and snacks to eat along the way (needless to say, but keep any wrappers or snack trash in your bag instead of throwing it on the ground). Overall, great day of fun with some friends!! BTW, there is a $5 per person entry fee when...
