Read moreThis is touted online as one of Pa’s best scenic overlooks and I would have to conquer it is on my list as well. Despite a small parking lot located near Duncannon’s recycling and composting facility, there is another parking lot that gains access to walk up to Hawk Rock overlook at what used to be Tubby’s nightclub. Hawk Rock offers a unique geology in its outcrop from Cove Mountain and is, as a whole structure, considered a syncline. Part of this shifting and converging of rocks has created a huge colluvial slope or rockslide which one walks through on the AT up to Hawk Rock but because it’s been there so long it’s fairly stable and rooted/seated well with trees and plants. Hawk Rock overlooks the Susquehanna valley, down onto Sherman’s creek and to its right the town of Duncannon as well as a partial view of the bend in the Susquehanna river. Also noteworthy is another overlook down AT towards the river that overlooks Peters mountain and full view of Susquehanna river called, I believe,...

I believe multiple trails branch off if you want to continue towards Hawk Rock and or along the Appalachian Trail. Once you reach elevation it cools off a bit from the bottom. Even on a cloudy July day can see the river and the surrounding areas quite well even with some fog.
On return, I actually made a loop to see Eagles Edge Vista, which had more prominent river views. It is along an unmarked trail which climbs slightly, staying left past a small firepit, then remains fairly straight and flat once on the top of the ridge. From there you'll have to continue on the unmarked trail back toward the parking lot. Highly recommend searching this route prior or having a web enabled map (cellar data was available on the ridge). Been my first trek and I got turned around twice but made it back down...
