We camped at Poe Valley State Park in July 2023. First, as most people have said about the park, the road in is mostly 10 miles of gravel. The campground is one loop and most sites looked to be nice sized and basically flat. We were in site 38 which was a very nice tent site, especially if you like to be closer to the bath house. The site was flat, all gravel, no roots or rocks for under the tent and we had a place to hang lights and 2 hammocks. You could hear the creek behind the tent, but there was too much ground growth to get back to it or even to search for fallen wood/kindling there. In our 2 nite stay we did not see one DCNR ranger drive by, although there was staff who emptied the trash at least once a day and cleaned the bath house. Bath house was clean, on the newer side, but not "new", had push button showers with hot water. The family shower had a good long flow with each push. Nice dish washing sinks are in the back of the bath house. One thing we noticed was a minor sewer smell as we arrived, and a very strong odor at the far end of the loop, but I did not notice it as much later the next day. Cell service was very spotty - a few texts went out randomly in camp and on the beach. We hiked thru the train tunnel over in Poe Paddy and a couple hundred yards past that we could get online in one spot. At that point we took a screenshot of a Geocache coordinate so we could use GPS to find it on the way back to camp, so if you want to do Geocaching get those screenshots of coordinates before you leave home. There are a few other caches to be found on the road back to the highway. Nice beach by the campground with soft sand, good concession stand with a very nice owner and canoe, paddle boat and kayak rentals - $10 each for half hour got us all around the lake. Stand is closed on Wednesday. We did a little hiking from camp and drove to Poe Paddy for some more. Overall it's a very nice, campground for some quiet time, beach/lake time and a...
Read moreWe stayed at Poe Valley State Park for the first time last May and had a really great time. With it being my wife and daughter's first time camping, we opted for one of the cabins. The cabins provided plenty of room and had picnic tables both inside and outside. The campground's bathrooms were very clean with modern plumbing. That's right, no popping a squat over a big hole in the ground along with hot water showers to clean off after a fun day in the mountains. My daughter loved walking around the beautiful lake, which also had a fun playground for her to play on.
We had such a great time we decided return in early November. It was absolutely frigid with nighttime temperatures dropping into the 20s. The cabins have built in space heaters and while they are loud and disrupt your sleep, they kept the cabin very warm at night.
The staff, including the park rangers and maintenance crew, were very friendly and helpful. The park rangers helped us un-jam windows that would not open in our cabin while the maintenance crew helped point us to a local place to buy some good firewood.
We definitely will be returning in the future, though we'll probably avoid going during cold...
Read moreI’ve come here all my life and always enjoyed it. Definitely worth a visit for the beach or the hikes. Haven’t fished it recently but a few years ago, we’ve had some good luck if you can walk through.
I would consider it a huge improve to setup some better footing and walkways to the picnic areas. Some of the rocks have been left, probably to avoid washout of paths but a few spot of gravel paths are too steep for kids or elder people.
There was a steady Park Ranger presence throughout the visit which we appreciated. There was a larger group of children swimming and playing that day. The walk across to the spill way is a nice one, didn’t get the chance this last time but there’s some minor climbing if you follow the path down from the stone...
