Located just 45 minutes south of Philadelphia and even less from the surrounding Cherry Hill area, Fort Mott State Park is truly an “off the beaten path” find. I visited in mid-August, on a Friday afternoon and there was one other person walking around plus the ranger. It was great!
You can see where old artillery batteries were housed and walk in the bunkers that housed them. Signs explain what you’re looking at and how the base used to operate. It’s a great place to give you a sense of how things were done 100 years ago. For example, no GPS targeted drones. Instead, navigational maps are on display to show how plotters triangulated positions of enemy targets while accounting for wind speed and sailing speed.
The park is a great place for people who like history or find military posts interesting. Fort Mott was built around the turn of the 20th century to fend off ships sailing Northbound up the Delaware River toward Philadelphia. The Fort’s outposts and 54 ft. tall observation posts all still stand. You can even climb up one of the towers with a guide (must be pre-planned).
If you like to take artistic pictures or have an appreciation for seeing the earth reclaim old buildings, this is a cool place to visit. There were some renovations occurring, but there’s still plenty to see.
We spent 1.5 hours and plan to go back. 2-3 hours would be plenty to say...
Read moreI love this place I've been going there since I was a kid. It is so awesome to be able to visit a place like this, and yes as time goes by some of the places there that use to be accessible end up needing work, but people just don't realize how historical and old this place actually is, so it has to be expected that of course over time it will need work. But the staff always tries to make every visit well worth it. This was and active military fort at one time so it's just amazing to be able to walk through and see how things where way back then, when this fort used to protect the water way between New Jersey and Delaware. There's also built in BBQ grills, a play ground and a great picnic area, so it's a great place to go for a family outting and a make a whole day out of it. There's a gift shop there also, be sure to stop in there and help support such a great historical landmark! All in all it's a great place to check out and to spend the day with the family, friends and kids at a place that will make for some...
Read moreFort Mott is a must-go for anyone even remotely interested in the history of coastal defense. It features some of the most well-preserved Endicott System batteries on the East coast, along with very informative signage for all knowledge levels. The museum is well-adorned with amazing artifacts from the fort's history, along with wonderful miniature models of the fort. The staff are friendly and extremely knowledgeable about the fort and its history (they might let you in the fire control tower if you ask nicely), and are able to answer any questions you may have about the fort. The staff weren't the only ones eager to greet us, however, as when we went (late September) the mosquitoes were all over us! They are especially prevalent around battery Edwards and Krayenbuhl, but they're pretty much everywhere in the fort. Make sure to bring bug spray! Overall, I would recommend visiting as it is only a short detour from I-295 and offers some spectacular learning...
