Thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Sager Mosaics + The Ruins project. The studio was, well, a working artist's studio more than a gift/souvenir shop when we visited. We were a little dicey on the timing, as the tour (booked a week or two in advance) was scheduled for 2pm to 3ish and we were cycling from West Newton to Connellsville in mid-October (dark by 6:30ish). The tour actually went past 4, which turned out fine - so many wonderful stories, I wouldn't want to have cut anything, and despite a flat tire, we were still in Connellsville in good time anyway, but it would have been easier for us if the tour could have started even at 1:30. All that aside, the mosaics and stories are a must-see/must-hear for anyone passing by/visiting the area. We were even fortunate to have a couple of contributing artists...
   Read moreLast Sunday was my second visit to The Ruins and I took a friend. I learned more about the miners and their families and saw new additions to the project. I recommend if you go, keep up with the tour guide. It's an easy, leisurely stroll at this outdoor art exhibit, but you could get behind if you're trying to take too many photos. Erica does a fantastic job of explaining the most intricate things about this display and you don't want to miss out as the tour moves along. (Also, stop at the nearby Get Go before your tour, as there are no public restrooms.) There are wonderful stories to hear and share about the roots of coal mining in western Pennsylvania...
   Read moreNext to the Great Allegheny Passage near Whitsett sits Sager Mosaics. Although I've ridden my bike by it several times, it has never been open. Luckily, it was open today, so I stopped in.
