Tomales Bay State Park — Attraction in Petaluma

Heart's Desire Beach is wonderful! And 2 Easy hiking trails on either side of the main beach lead to other beaches. There are some wooden wikiups at one and you can see stone shards from native rock shaping. The other is smaller and more intimate with some amazing moss covered trees up the hill. An enchanting place. My favorite in the entire bay area. A perfect picnic spot and often there are interesting birds around. Dress in layers and wear or bring a swim suit. The water can be surprisingly warm in summer. Keep an eye out for jellyfish though. Many have a painful sting. I've seen several differents types here but they usually come in big 'herds' and are easy to see. I would reccomend this spot to any nature/beach lover. Great spot to take off for...

The drive from Inverness through Tomales Park to the lighthouse is one of the most beautiful in the world with lots of stopping points along the way to park, get out, and enjoy the view. It looks like plenty of hiking trails too though we stuck to the road other than walking out to South Beach, to look out near lighthouse where we saw the seals far below, and then various short walks near the lighthouse. Pierce Point is one of my favorite locations for wildlife photography. The Tule Elk are a wonderful animal to just watch or photograph. I can spend hours just sitting on the trail viewing these magnificent animals. Just stay on the trail especially during the mating season when the large bull elk get all puffed up and are running the cow elk around,You don't want too get in between the bulls and the cows as this can be very dangerous.
