Popham Beach is a premier destination beach for those in central maine. It is huge and offers something for everyone. There are acres of sand, rocks to explore, wildlife, and surf fishing on the incoming tide. This is a family friendly beach with ample parking and clean bath houses. State park entrance fees are charged and the onsite parking can fill fast during tourist season so get there early in the summer to be prepared to walk half a mile or so in. Dogs are allowed after october1 but bring a coat as the breeze off the water gets chilly. Nearby coastal. Defense forts Popham (1860's) and Baldwin (WW 1 and 2) are within easy reach and are neat to explore, scenic Bath is nearby for shopping and dining as is the larger Brunswick. Naturalists will note that river course changes and 2010 winter storms are actively remodeling the beach ( check out the history on Google Earth) resulting in lots of fallen trees and restricted access to some dunes. If you haven't been to Popham for a few years it is a very different place and well...

Incompetent, slow gate operators to get into the beach. We got there early (9AM on a weekday) and still had to wait 30 minutes in a huge line of cars just to get in because only 1 of the 2 windows was open to take money. Why is Popham beach always like this now? Why don't they ever open the other window when there's a huge line of cars? Besides the cashier, there were 2 other workers, 1 of them literally doing nothing standing outside by the cars with a walkie talkie, the other guy's job was to ask people if they had Park passes. You pay someone to do this? Infuriating inefficiency. Why waste all these people's time waiting just to hand a wagie some cash? You need to put a sign outside the gatehouse so people know in advance how much it costs when they pull up.. the sign that was there has been missing for over a year now. It's a gorgeous beach run by...

Even though we visited this beautiful beach a few years ago, I decided to post a review about this wonderful place. What can I say about this amazing beach! This place is absolutely breathtaking! The view, the sand, the water are so beautiful. The last time we visited this beach a number of years ago, it wasn't too busy. Nice and quiet and you don't have to worry about being stuck too close to people. When the tide is low, it is possible to walk to a small Island. We truly enjoyed spending the entire day relaxing and taking some sun. One thing, the water is freezing, got to be pretty brave to dive in. However, it doesn't seem to bother the kids and they seem to enjoy playing in the sand on the shore. Pretty sure this is one of the best family beaches around. Really worth stopping by and spending the day. No problem...

Popham Beach was really fun to visit. I went for my first time on a warm-ish March day, and timed my arrival right around low tide. When the tide is low, you can walk on the sand for a really long way, and can walk out to some islands. During the off-season, dogs are allowed on the beach (must be leashed) and you can get a permit to ride your horse on the beach also. I saw 3 riders during my visit and plenty of cute doggos! There is a bathroom area, but I didn't go in. It may have been closed since it is winter. I didn't check, but I did notice there is also an all-season vault toilet available too. It seemed like there was plenty of parking, but I imagine it could fill up quickly during the summer.
