On first approach I was starting to question my decision to drive the 85 miles to this site because of the first impression...when you turn in to the drive, it looks like it has been abandoned for a few years with what was once lawns and a traffic Island being all over grown with vegetation. The drive and parking lot had a lot of cracks with vegetation growing through them. I am guessing this is because of a lack of proper funding... The museum was great with hand-on exhibits for the children and adults alike. The museum has a lot of information so take some time to really immerse yourself. I would highly recommend visiting if it is open and you have at least 1-2 hours. This is a hands-on educational experience for all ages. The historical center has a lot of great artifacts all of which you can touch and there is also the historically recreated fort a short walk away with all kinds of interesting period specific things to learn, see and also experience. The hours on Google were wrong as it is open until 5pm on Saturdays. There are guided tours, but it also appeared that you could also go...
Read moreA hidden Gem. This stop, a Minnesota Historical Society Site, does an excellent job of telling the story of the fur traders who stayed here much earlier in our history, as well as the interaction with native tribes from the area. A great visitor center loaded with information, and a short walk away, the Post titself (remade from original documents. Our kids, ages 12-17, thought it was a great stop. Allow a couple of hours to soak it all in. Historical Members get in...
