We were attending an event nearby and stumbled across this historical society site when researching things nearby. I would highly recommend visiting if it is open and you have at least 1-2 hours. This is a hands-on educational experience for all ages. The historical center has a lot of great artifacts all of which you can touch and there is also the historically recreated fort a short walk away with all kinds of interesting period specific things to learn, see and also experience. There are a couple short trails to go near the water or out into the Meadow area. It looks as though groups are welcome and that there may be snowshoeing in the winter. The hours on Google were wrong as it is open until 5pm on Saturdays. There are guided tours, but it also appeared that you could also go on your own.

A hidden Gem. This stop, a Minnesota Historical Society Site, does an excellent job of telling the story of the fur traders who stayed here much earlier in our history, as well as the interaction with native tribes from the area. A great visitor center loaded with information, and a short walk away, the Post titself (remade from original documents. Our kids, ages 12-17, thought it was a great stop. Allow a couple of hours to soak it all in. Historical Members get in with their pass.

This is one of the Minnesota Historical Society's sites in east central Minnesota, a rebuilt fur trading post from 1804. We had the place to ourselves when we were here. The guide was very knowledgeable about the area and the era and there were many authentic artifacts on site from the times. The story about how beaver-felt hats were so popular for a short period of time made me realize how fickle fashion really is. Worth a drive from the Twin Cities, Duluth or pretty much anywhere!

On first approach I was starting to question my decision to drive the 85 miles to this site because of the first impression...when you turn in to the drive, it looks like it has been abandoned for a few years with what was once lawns and a traffic Island being all over grown with vegetation. The drive and parking lot had a lot of cracks with vegetation growing through them. I am guessing this is because of a lack of proper funding... BUT I know you don't judge a book by its cover so I made my way toward the building. Once you get in to the building it is a totally different experience. The museum was great with hand-on exhibits for the children and adults alike. The museum has a lot of information so take some time to really immerse yourself. I do with there was more on the archeological dig that happened at the site.. like a booklet or something. I would recommend going through the museum prior the tour. The tour itself is interactive. You are allowed to touch objects and very informative. The visitor center has a nice gift shop and clean restrooms. The staff was...
