Stopped in (at the Pinkham Notch base area) Sunday, April 28, 2019 just before dark at 7:30pm. I was driving by, not hiking nearby, having skied at Sunday River (on their closing day for free). The main building at Pinkham Notch was open at this hour, was warm inside, and the staff was welcoming. I used the bathroom, filled up my water bottle, and checked out the 3-D topographic map inside. The retail store was still open and had waterproof jackets and pants for sale, as well as maps. Tourist items, too, were for sale. I also noticed plastic totes full of AMC snowshoes inside, the same room as the 3-D map. The mountains were still snow covered. Sadly, yet informatively, along one side of the 3-D map (at the base of the map) there was a long list of hikers and skiers who had tragically died on Mt. Washington over the years, including a man who recently passed on April 11, 2019 -- only two and a half weeks ago. Could've been me. No matter how well prepared you are, there are unexpected hazards and dangers up there.

This is not a tennis shoe and jacket kind of hike. It blurs the line between a typical hike and mountain climbing. The mountain makes its own weather and there can be temperature drops of 30-40 degrees from base to summit depending on the day. Wind speed can also be extreme at the top. To put it in perspective, Mt. Everest climbers use this peak during the winter to train as the harsh conditions can be similar, minus the lack of oxygen and glacier gaps. That said, if you are up for the hike, it’s worth it. Be prepared to hike a trail that is mainly rocks and boulders most of the way and then very steep slopes higher up depending on which trail you take. Absolutely worth it, even if you can only make it partway up. The gift shop is also excellent.

We visited during the second week of October 2020. We live on Maine and camp and hike in the WMNF frequently, but had never been to Crystal Cascades (the waterfall in my photos, a short walk up the Tuckerman Ravine trail). Wow, it didn't disappoint! It's been drought conditions here in New England for months, but the waterfall was still going strong. We also explored some other shorter trails around the area next to the river and just enjoyed the beautiful foliage and mountain views. Although I've lived here all my life it just never gets old. Can't wait to go back and explore more! 10/10 would recommend

Spectacular yet strenuous hike. We took the Tuckerman Ravine trail up to the summit and back. Amazing views the entire way, the ravine is stunning. Very rocky the entire hike, wear good grippy shoes. Mt Washington is known for extreme weather/winds. Bring a windbreaker for the top. There is a visitor center/gift shop/bathrooms at the top, and a water refill station halfway up the hike. We came on a weekend and it was PACKED at the top with people who drove up. Going down was tough on the knees. Not for a novice hiker or very small children.

Challenging long hike that will test your agility. If you love climbing rocks, big & small, you will love this hike. We took the lions head trail up to the summit. (Harder way). On the way back we took the tuckerman revine trail. If you are physically fit and want a challenge, take the lions head route. I do not recommend it for kids or elders. There was a family stuck for 45 minutes on the side of the mountain. We helped them get back on course. Some parts are very steep and require you to climb. Have fun!

Here is Crystal Cascades along Tuckerman Ravine (along with a nice view from the trail). It’s a beautiful waterfall and very easy to get to! It’s just under a mile round trip to get to. The views are spectacular especially given how short of a hike it is. With that said, there will likely be other people with you soaking in the view. If you visit in winter, I’d recommend wearing spikes as it’s a little icy near the viewing area. Highly recommend if you are in the area 😊
