This is a difficult review right now due to construction, and I am sure it will change once completed.
It is free to visit the park, but they had someone at the gate asking for donations the day we visited.
PARKING: Weekend parking is terrible right now as they have the road blocked, and you can only park in the lot near the front gate. Once they complete the new parking lot you will be able to park right next to the falls area.
HIKING: Due to the road being blocked, we only did a little hiking out the red trail. It starts near the parking lot and goes up a hill and splits almost immediately. We went left, which took us even more straight uphill for the half mile that we hiked out. Trail is a single file path with a fair amount of loose rock.
FALLS: As of writing, you have to walk a half mile from the parking lot near the front gate to get to the falls. However, It is a pretty flat paved road. We enjoyed playing in the creek and around the falls. I would warn you that most of the bottom is rock, but it was extremely slick. I saw several people fall while moving around. They have a few benches near the falls to sit on, but several people had brought camp chairs or hammocks to relax in while not in the water. This is a nice spot to visit for a few hours and hang out. We will come back again and recommend others...
Read moreA nicely tucked away, but not hidden, gem. Roughly 20 minutes from downtown birmingham, its easily accessible, has walking and hiking trails, benches, picnic tables and plenty of places to throw a blanket down and read, write, paint or nap. A couple of parking spots are located on roadside and a there is small lot by the waterfall. There were also a few Port o johns on the lot. Didn't really see anywhere to fish. Very shallow water with a lot of rocks and limbs to snag a hook on. No camping at all eother. But, very clean, well maintained, fantastic scenery for photos and always free to everyone. A perfect escape from city life without...
Read moreRocks are super slippery. Water is cold & current may be strong. Stick closer to your kids (in case they fall or aren't strong swimmers). We went on a weekend in summer and it got kinda crowded. There were young adults/teens hanging out, and my daughter was trying to slide down the rock in an inner tube. Took 20 min for some young woman to move out of the way. The waterfalls are loud, so even when shouting, she couldn't hear. Just be patient with all the people that might be there & their limited abilities to swim/maneuver around the rocks. Beautiful if it's...
