Decided to camp for a few days close to home and while I've been at this park for an hour here and there for hiking, I've never spent quality time here. I am pleasantly surprised by how beautiful this place is. The campsites are spaced far enough apart that you feel some sort of privacy. I chose a walk-in tent site. Lots of hiking trails and areas for fishing. I don't have a kayak, but if you do, bring it! There's also a beach and swimming area but it's too cold in May for that. So peaceful and relaxing while surrounded by the sights and sounds of nature. Fell asleep to the sound of peepers and woke up to the sound of turkeys. And the deer walked right by my tent in the morning. Both deer pictures were taken while sitting in my chair next to my tent. Four calmly passed by and let me enjoy their presence. I would suggest downloading maps ahead of time or bringing them with you since I haven't seen any staff yet, not even at my arrival yesterday. So I had to find my way to my site myself and search out the restrooms and all that good stuff. Signage is very clear so it wasn't too difficult. Also, restrooms are the cleanest I've ever seen at a campground. I didn't know where to get firewood or supplies nearby either, but there's enough kindling around so I just gathered some fallen wood myself from around the site, and I'm an explorer so I found a great general store about 4 miles from the campground. This place is a must if you're coming through the area and need a great camping place that is quiet, calm and gets you to relax! Edit to add: I did find firewood my 4th day here, near the front entrance that you pay using a QR code. I thought it was someone's personal stash and didn't realize it was for the guests to purchase. I never did meet a staff member my entire time there (Tuesday afternoon through Saturday morning). Thankfully I'm a seasoned camper, but if you're a first timer this could be difficult. It is an amazing place though and I...
Read moreWe were in site 5. It was large and private, or at least as private as a corner spot in a busy campground could be. We were there during the week and it was a very quiet campground. It was raining most of the time we were there, so that could have been why it was quiet. We were tent camping and wanted electric, so this was a perfect spot most if not all other occupied sites were campers.that doesn't bother us,but it may bother others. It was beautiful in this spot. We were next to and in front of the cabins in this loop, and it was just a short walk to the lake, convenient I you bring a kyak or some other small boat to put in the lake. This area of the lake was only for recreational boating, no swimming. The bathrooms were a bit of a walk for me, but still doable, I have a bad back and it effects my ability to walk. The bathrooms were clean and well stocked. The showers had great water pressure and were clean as well. The lake is beautiful and wheelchair accessible, a sidewalk goes into the lake deep enough for all to enjoy!...
Read moreAttended a Backcountry Hunters & Anglers event in July, 2023 in Conneaut, Ohio that included primitive camping. Needed to find a dump station on the way home, so we called to confirm Chapman State Park had a dump station available. The charge for a PA resident to use the dump station is $10. (Dump station is included if you stay at the campground, but we were not.) The rangers were leaving, so I confirmed I could pay the $10 cash utilizing an Honor System Envelope and putting it in the drop box at the Ranger Station.
Checked out the Campground while there as it is located within Allegheny National Forest. Two loops, each half pet friendly with pet stations. Some walk-in tent sites. Newer bathrooms. Trails surrounded the campground. Downside: Most sites were on the smaller side that might not fit our 24' trailer with our F150 extended cab with 8' bed truck.
Walked part of a trail with access to the lake. Many kayaks on the water. Day Use area across the way. Didn't get a chance to check out the dam...
