This park is named after the sandhill crane, a large species of crane than can have a six foot wing span. You can typically find them near a body of water. We don't have them as far south as I live so it is always a treat to see them in St. Lucie County. in Florida they are protected by the U.S. Migratory Bird Treaty Act and are a State-designated Threatened species by Florida's Endangered and Threatened Species Rule. Opened in 1992, the 19 acre Sandhill Crane Park has many amenities to appeal to the Port St. Lucie community. These include a 57 foot octagon shaped pavilion with tables, lights, electricity, water, and grill, a 20 foot octagon family pavilion with a 4 foot table, three baseball/softball fields with sports lighting, four lighted racquetball courts, three sand volleyball courts, outdoor shower, and a playground for ages 2 to 12. I missed seeing sandhill cranes in the park but I did spot some herons and egrets by the water. I love how Sandhill Crane Park is a well designed park that encourages outdoor activities and a connection to nature.

This is a very clean Park right off of Walton Road near The savannas Preserve State Park. There is a nice baseball field and a playground for the children with a large Pavilion area is covered. The Pavilion area has benches and men's and ladies rooms that are very clean inside. The play area is really unique with climbing things that the children will find unique and challenging. There is also a small field area where you could set up a play area for children to play soccer or football horseshoes. Smoking is only allowed in designated areas which I really like that for the adults and especially the children's sake. There's cameras everywhere monitoring the parking lot, Pavilion so it looks like there was some really good security around here as well.

Venturing for a new local park we passed this one and decided to take a look. We pullin in from PGA and saw the road veering left was blocked off. We went up the overlook which had amazing views and hiked down the side canal alongside the jetskiers a few miles. It was a beautiful park. Greeting us at the enterance were two Sandhill Crane! Cant wait to see the other parts of the park next time we go. Here are some pictures.

I moved to Port St. Lucie about a year ago and I've been visiting parks where I could walk my dog. There are dog parks, parks with boat ramps, picnic parks, etc. Today was the first time I visited Sandhill Crane Park. I'm 62 years old and I've never seen a park as beautiful and clean... actually immaculate, as this park. It's got baseball fields, beach volleyball, and a whole bunch of other stuff. I walked around it for quite a while this evening. The grass is mowed neatly, the bushes are all trimmed, the fields are groomed. Really... I've never seen anything like it. I don't know who takes care of this park. But, I do know that it's his/her passion. Not a single piece of trash. Nothing out of place. All of the amenities you need just to enjoy yourself. Amazing. Kudos to the keepers and the folks who run the organization behind this facility. This place could be a model for all parks across...
